FISH AND FILTH.
SYDNEY MUNICIPAL MARKETS. A SHOCKING STATE. Shocking conditions have been revealed at the Municipal Fish Markets, and their removal and re-establish-meut is recommended to the- City Council by the town clerk (Mr WLayton), says a Sydney paper. His investigations were prompted by a report made by the market inspector of the State Fisheries Department (Mr J. Bennett). ''The premises are practically built in a hole in the ground/’ says that officer, “with a roof ijbout 18ft high, and, owing to lack of proper ventilation. it is impossible for foul air to get away. The southern half, in which cleaning troughs are- erected, is about 14ft below the street level, has shops and offices on top, and lias no ventilation of any kind. The result is that on a hot day the place is like an oven, and the stench- is indescribable. The- rest of the market, owing to the low roof, is very little better. There are two coffee-stalls and a public lavatory Inside the market.
“Tile condemned fish room,” adds tho inspector, “is inside the market, close to where fish are being sold and cleaned, and right in front of one of the coffee-stalls. It lias no ventilation whatever, and when the doors are opened to place bad fish inside the smell is unbearable.” The inspector recommends the erection of new and properly ventilated markets on a site close to the harbour.
