WAITAKARURU.

PLUNKET SOCIETY’S DRIVE,

The Waitakaruru branch of the Plunket Society raised a big proportion of its quota for. the Plunket nurse’s car fund with a. concert in the Waitakaruru Hall on Wednesday evening. The attendance was a record, and the hall was packed to its utmost. Members of the Plunket Society and others had worked hard to make the function a success, and their efforts were well rewarded, for almost £2O ! was raised. The hall was very prettily decorated with punga ferns and paper streamers, and ferns and curtains were used to mark a stage. f*

A very enjoyable concert, arranged by Mesdames Henderson and Wylie, was provided by a party of Thames instrumentalists and vocalists. Songs were contributed by Miss Donaldson, Mrs Willis, Miss Donnelly, and Messrs A. Johnston, H. Beach, and R- Bailey, while Mr A. Williams contributed cornet solos, Mr Meikle saxophone solos, ■Mr Kerby violin solos, and the whole company joined in part songs. The instrumentalists of the Thames party also 'contributed to the. dance music, thereby relieving Messrs R. Hunter, R. Duffin, Mrs Henderson, and others. Various novel competitions were held as a means of collecting- funds. Among the most popular was an ankle show in which 20 pairs of ankles were exhibited below a curtain. The judge. Dr. Lange, of Turua, selected those of Mrs H. L. Berney as the most shapely. Other novel contests were for long hair and for short hair. Mr J. Terrill, hairdresser, of Ngatea, selected Miss E. Donaghy, of Pipiroa, from the 12 short-haired girls, and Mrs Arthur, of Pipiroa, from the five women with long hair.
