CORRESPONDENCE.
REGRADING OF FOOTBALLERS.
LTo the Editors
Sir,—lt is with incredibility that I read in your, report of the Paeroa Rugby Union affairs of the regrading of a Netherton senior player—W. Potter — to junior status. This particular. player has been playing senior foootball for the last four years to my knowledge,, probably longer, and was considered by the Rugby Union’s senior representative selector to be efficient enough to be chosen in representative matches last year although he did not take the field, owing, perhaps, to some disability or lack of the necessary moral courage. With all respect to the present Rugby Union executive, I think that they acted rather hastily in the matter, which has created quite an unfavourable feeling in football circles. A player of VI. Potter’s calibre should not be allowed to play as a junior, especially in the circumstances, when it should also be recognised that there are three senior teams in the Cup competition, any of which would be only too willing to give Potter a place in their team—not that he is a Nepia or a Karl Ifwerson. It appears to me that this player is more concerned where the opposition is weak, instead of going up a step and doing his utmost to elevate himself in the game of Rugby. Out of consideration for the young boys who art playing junior football the Rugby. Union should reconsider the regrading of this man.
