MAIN HIGHWAYS.

HAURAKI PLAINS SECTIONS.

REPRESENTATIONS OF COUNCIL.

At the Hauraki Plains County Council meeting on Thursday last Cr. J. C. Miller, the council’s representatiive on the No. 2. District Highways Council, reported that he had brought up the matter of declaring as main highways the Patetonga-Ngatea, road and the Netherton-Orongo road, and the subsidisation as a deviation of the section of road now used instead of Pekapeka Road. With reference to the Patetonga-Ngatea road, the board bad advised that the council did not push the matter until the suggested deviation and the Patetonga metalling programme had been finalised. The chairman of the board had pointed out that it was to the advantage- of the county not to have the road as a highway at the present time, as the highway vote was less than that promised as a result of the Patetonga Commission. With reference to the road from Carter’s corner to Orongo being declared a highway, the boad advised deferring the request until the Hauraki bridge was open, when tallies of traffic would prove whether this road oi- the road on the Hikutaia. side of the river should be the highway. In connection with a grant for the maintenance of the Kerepeehi-Whare-poa road and the section of the Tu-rua-Netherton road from the ferry corner to Pekapeka Road corner, which was being used as a highway until such time as Pekapeka Road was in a fit state to take the highway traffic the District Council had stated that this was a matter entirely for the Main Highways Board, and should be taken up with it.

Discussing the report, the chairman asked if the representatives of the adjacent counties support the declaring of the Patetonga-Ngaeta road as a highway. He had heard that the Piako County was advocating the road to Ohinewai.

Cr. Miller expressed the opinion that the Piako County representatives would support the Plains Council’s representations. It was decided to apply direct to the Highways Board for a subsidy for maintaining the Ke-repeehi-Wharepoa and Turua-Netherton road, which was •serving as a detour road.
