POLICE COURT.

PAEROA, THIS MORNING. TWO CASES REMANDED. At the local Police Court this mornnig, before Mr G. P- Lamb, J.P., a first offender was charged with being in a state of drunkenness while in charge- of a horse and gig in Normanby Road on Saturday afternoon. Mr R. S. Carden appeared for defendant, and in pleading not guilty applied for a remand until this afternoon. The police agreed, and the remand was granted. The case- of a. local resident who appeared on remand charged with alleged assault, was further remanded until June 6 next. In applying for the remand Constable J. McClinchy stated that the charge was an indictable one, but he- had been instructed that it would be reduced.

Mr C. N. O’Neill, who appeared for the accused, said that unfortunately as the charge stood it was an Indictable offence, and although he was prepared to go on with the case he would not oppose the remand. The remand was granted. DRUNKENNESS CHARGE. An elderly labourer named Frederick Murphy was charged with drunkenness on Saturday, it being his second offence within six months. He pleaded guilty. Constable McClinchy stated that defendant, who was a decent man and a good worker, but who was at present out of work, had got drunk on Saturday. In that state he had fallen into an open drain in Normanby Road on Saturday night. Defendent had been rescued from his perilous position by some young men who were passing. He was in a state of collapse, being wet through and cold, and on that account the- police had taken him to his home. He had come along to the Court voluntarily and pleaded guilty. “I do not like to be hard on you, but you will be convicted and fined 10s, with costs amounting to 10s, and do npt come back here again,” was the remark of the Justice of the Peace. • „
