COUNTY WORKS.

ENGINEER’S REPORT. The following report of the Hauraki Plains county engineer, Mr F. Bisham, was read at the council meeting on Thursday last: — TURUA-NETHERTON LOAN. “Bitumen work on Hauraki Road is now completed. A coat of 4in metal is being Haiti on Wharepoa-Kerepeehi Road, which will be rolled and blinded with red metal.” In reply to Cr. Madgwiek the engineer said that there was sufficient money to complete the work. MAIN HIGHWAYS. “Surfacing on the KopuaiahiOrongo road is completed from Hale s to the school corner, and the road to the ferry is now being surfaced. “A start on the Kercpeehi road has been made, and the work is proceeding as rapidly as supplies of metal permit. “I have suspended work on the Wai-takaruru-Pipiroa road between the canal and Dallgety’s corner until th© laying of the water-main ! s completed “Between the Waitakaniru canal and stream one scow-load of Coromandel shingle has been tried foi surfacing. It will make a comparative test with the balance, of the red metal surfacing now being laid. “Surfacing between Dalgety’s corner' and Hopai Road is in hand. “All roads are being frequent!.' graded and loose metal dragged on to the road. “I would like authority to experiment with some bitumen emulsion on various portions of, roads, and also to obtain one scow-load of McCallum s dredged shingle.” Cr. Harris expressed the opinion that more use should be made of Coromandel shingle. It was making a splendid road, and would be cheaper and better than red metal. Authority was given the engineer to obtain the bitumen emulsion and dredged shingle. "One truck is no-w engaged on repairs to bridges and culverts on clay roads. PEKAPEKA WATER SUPPLY. “During the month the- winding of the motor burnt out leaving consumers without water for three days. A duplicate motor was borrowed from the makers and the damaged one was sent to Hamilton to be rewound. If there is sufficient money left in the loan I would suggest the duplicate motor being retained as a standby ih case of future similar trouble. I am unable to ascertain the exact cause of the burning, which might be attributed to several causes. The cost of a spare motor would be £15.”

There being sufficient money to provide a duplicate motor this course was adopted on the motion of Cr. Fisher.
