PAEROA DOMAIN.
MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD. PLAYING AREAS & IMPROVEMENTS The monthly meeting of the Paeroa Domain Board was held on Thursday night, the chairman (Mr W. Marshall) presiding over Messrs P. E. Brenan, F. E. Flatt, E. Edwards, J. W. Silcock, H. J. Hare, J. Pinder E. A. Porritt, W. Turner, and W. C. Alexander (secretary). AREA FOR COFFEE STALL. The- officer in charge of the local troop of Girl Guides wrote asking for permission to run a coffee stall at or near the domain on such Saturdays as there were bi,g football matches. The money so raised would go towards the summer encampment fund. It was decided to reply that the board would give permission to erect a stall outside the domain gate provided it did not interfere with traffic. It was suggested that application should be made to the Paeroa aid Thames Valley Rugby Unions for an area of ground insi.de the- domain for the purpose. PLAYING AREA REQUIRED. The Paeroa Basketball Association wrote- asking for a playing area of 100 ft by 40ft at the domain, and also inquiring the cost if it could be granted. Mr Brenan said that there was ample room for the ground. As the association was -not strong financially he moved that the- request be granted, and that the ground be given free for this season. Mr Edwards suggested that the association should be given an area on the Rayvhitiroa block and allowed to charge for admission. The chairman said that at the present time the area was rather far away, and in any case it was pleasing to see the crowd in the domain on Saturdays. The resolution was carried. IMPROVEMENTS SUGGESTED. The state of disrepair of the fences surrounding Primrose Hill was mentioned by Mr Porritt who said that some repair work should be done at once. He also referred to a large clump of bamboo which was grooving on the right-hand side of the main path leading to the- domain rotunda. He said that despite- trenching and the cutting of roots the plant continued to flourish, and was sending up -roots through the path and destroying the asphalt. Although he was loath to have the bamboo destroyed, he considered that it was in the interests of the asphalt to have it removed.
WOLFE STREET RESERVE. Reference was also made to that portion of Wolfe Street that Had been cleared recently. He thought it would be- a waste of money if it was allowed to go back into its former condition, and he suggested that it should be cropped or sown down in grass and taken into the reserve area adjacent. The chairman pointed out that before the suggestion could be put into effect it would be necessary ito close Wolfe Street. However, the domain
committee had the matter in hand, and the work of clearing and burning off was actually under way.
MANURE FOR PRIMROSE HILL. That the grass on Primrose- Hill was poor ap-d dying out was mentioned by Mr Edwards. He thought that the area should be top-dressed with artificial manure, and he contended that the expense incurred would be justified by the improved appearance of the pasture. He thought it might lie possible to come to some arrangement with the lessee of the area if the work was undertaken. The chairman of the domain committee (Mr P. E. Brenan) said that it was quite good to receive suggestions, and the various matters would
be looked into, but it was no use the committee attempting to give effect " to the recommendations unless more money could be .found. There was only £l5O for the domain on the estimates, and that sum would scarcely pay for ordinary maintenance and repair work. A further £lOO could be spent quite easily, but he did not see where it was coming from.
