PLAINS WATER SUPPLY.

PROGRESS OF WORK. INCREASE IN COST. The Hauraki Plains County Council’s water supply engineer, Mr E. F. Adams, reported to the council on the progress of the Hauraki, Plains West water supply works on Thursday as follows :— “Headworks.—Last month’s progress has not been maintained, but the initial difficulties have been overcome, the work is well in hand, and in a position to be quickly finished. It is far ahead of the other contracts. The contractor is now reopening the quarry to get a supply of, the best blue rock to finish the job and for other works. This is very desirable, as the best material to be picked up has been used, and I therefore informed him that unless your council desires otherwise his method of work has my approval in the meantime. “Supply Main. —This work is proceeding slowly for various reasons, one of which is that the material is not coming to hand fast enough. We have taken levels and submitted the crosssectional drawings of the canals to the drainage engineer at Kerepeehi. I hope to get a modification of the department’s improvement proposals to the canals, particularly in the matter of depth, otherwise the work of laying the mains beyond disturbance will be very expensive. The scheme to enlarge the cross-section of the canals came as a shock to me, as I was not aware- of it. Between that and the intended new site of the stream canal bridge, it makes an expensive alteration in the work. This, of course, will be a matter of adjustment with the- contractor, but the cost of special modifications involving extra depth and width must necessarily be borne by the council. The new site of .the bridge will, however, not make a more expensive route for the mains. The contractor informs me that further supplies of pipes, etc., will be sent and another laying gang put on for the Waitakaruru Stream road.

“Pumping Station Site. —I would recommend that this he acquired. The best sites are on Mr McAulay’s property. The matter of living quarters also, perhaps, arises in connection with the station.” Tire report was referred to the Waterworks Committee, which is dealing with the- whole matter.
