MOTOR ACCIDENT.
DRUNKEN DRIVER OF LORRY. £lO FINE INFLICTED. Janies Crotty was charged before Messrs A. J. Burrows and S. Sellars, J’s.P., at the Te Aroha Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday with having been found in charge of a motor lorry on the main Te Aroha-Paeroh road whilein a state of intoxication. Defendant pleaded guilty. Constable Monson stated that between 4 and 5 o’clock on the evening of the 6th Mr Patterson, a commercial traveller, was motoring along the main road from Mangaiti to Te Arolia. When about half a mile from Mangaiti,he saw a Ford motor truck coming towards him. As the truck approached Mr Patterson pulled well to the side of the road, but notwithstanding this precaution the truck crashed into the car. Mr McKenzie, who was in the car, was thrown out, and was badly cut about the head. Both tlie lorry and the car were badly damaged. The police were notified, and when thy arrived it was found that defendant was under the influence of liquor, though no doubt he had been sobered up somewhat by the accident. Mr McKenzie had to receive medical attention. Defendant had never been before the Court before. The Bench stated that for the offence committed the. defendant was liable to a fine of £lOO- or three months’ imprisonment. He would be convicted and fined £lO, in default 30 days’ imprisonment, and his license would be. suspended for six months.
