SANITARY SERVICE.

REPORT OF COMMITTER

DISCUSSION BA’ COUNCIL.

The position of. the sanitary service and the question of sewer extensions were referred to in the following report, which was submitted by the Health Committee at last night’s meeting of the Paferoa Borough Council

“There are at present 74 sanitary collections being made. Of these six are weekly, 57 are fortnightly, and 11 are monthly, for two of which applications have been made for connections to the sewer, which reduces the number to 72, with an average weekly coillection of 35 and weekly payments totalling £2 Ils 3d. Of this number we find 28 houses can connect with the sewer, and we recommend, without fear or favour, that these.owners should be compelled to connect up with the system. When this is done the weekly returns will total £1 Us 3d.

“This makes it obvious that some drastic alteration in the present method has become necessary, and we suggest that an effort be made to organise- the work into one night only a week, and that it be done by one member of the staff. By this means only does it appear possible to avoid a heavy loss.

"A perusal of the balance of the houses shows that they practically exist in five blocks: (1) Coronation Road, or No. 2 area ; (2) over the Te Aroha Road bridge, or No. 5 area, both of which require separate septic tanks ; (3) Wood Street, where approximately 16 chains extension of sewer in No. 1 area would serve about eight houses; (4) Miller Avenue in the vicinity of the Manual School, being part of No. 4 area, but concerning which sufficient data are not available in the office for the committee, to know if an extension would be anything like a reasonable proposition ; (5) The area in the vicinity of Dearie Street, for which no provision appears to have been made in the original plan. There are also two houses on Puke Road which merit consideration and might be served from Poland Street, and also one or two isolated cases where assistance to instal small private- septic tanks might be in the public interest. There is also the question of the extension asked for by R. S. Carden and others in Kennedy Street. The Coronation Street area would appear to be an expensive proposition owing to the flat grade, and the large pipes and separate septic tank necessary, while the Te Aroha Road area would cost a considerable sum for the number of houses to bo served. We unanimously agree that an extension to Wood Street should be made if finances permit. The Miller Avenue and Dearie Street areas will require some expert investigation and advi.ee-. The extension asked for by R. S. Carden and others, to which they are willing to contribute, Is, we think, a desirable one, and as there is insufficient money in the loan account at present for any larger undertaking we recommend that this work be put in 'hand. We suggest further that the committee be authorised to obtain the advice necessary in order that this report may be completed by having separate estimates of what it would cost to instal sewers in blocks 1 to 5.” After a brief discussion the report was adopted.
