At the annual meeting of shareholders of the, Imperial Gold Mining Co., Ltd., at Paeroa on Monday a vote of sincere condolence was accorded the widow and family of the late Mr Edward Shaw. In moving the resolution the chairman (Mr F. E. Flatt) referred' to the fact that the late Mr Shaw, who was a member of the directorate, took a keen interest in and had a sound knowledge- of all mining matters. His judgment and helpful advice would be sorely missed'. The resolution was carried in silence, the members standing.

Mr Hope Gibbons, the ex-Mayor of Wanganui, incidentally mentioned at the Wanganui Council gathering last week, that the first year he was in office cost him £lO9O, and for subsequent years not less than £5OO per annum. Another substantial gift of the Mayor and Mayoress was in connection with St. Helens; Homes.

Soldier settlers of Orongo are still waiting the investigation promised by the Minister of Lands on his recent visit to the settlement. Many of the settlers have looked, about for other farms, but so far without success. A large party investigated the Crown sections along the Waitakaru-ru-Maukoro canal road last week-end, but came to- the conclusion' that they could not wait sufficiently long enough for the land to become productive.

Accounts amounting to £lllO Is 6d were passed for payment at Monday’s meeting of the Thames Hospital Board. The receipts for April totalled £1606 13s lOd, including £336 representing patients’ fees.

The bitumen sealing of the roads in the Turua Southern Area Road Loan district has now been completed and there is now a continuous stretch of bitumen bound road from near Orongo to beyond the old Wharepoa ferry corner. The balance- of the Turua-Netherton road is now being repaired.

A reminder is given- that the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co.’s next Paeroa sale is to be held on Friday next. The popularity of this Paeroa fixture is shown by the large number of entries received. Included in the list of stock to be -submitted to auction is a fine line of Jersey and Jersey-Holstein cross cows in .milk and due to calve. The cows are a good line, being mostly second and third' calvers, and anyone in search of good dairy cows would do well to ttttend this sale, full particulars or which arc advertised in this issue.

A small gang of men, with roadmaking implements, passed through the Plains on Saturday last and established a camp at the end of the unmetalled section of the main highway a few miles beyond Waitakaruru. It therefore seems that the construction of the new road is to be commenced at once, as was stated by the Minister of Public Works when in Waitakaruru last month. Concrete abutment walls for a new bridge were erected some weeks ago alongside the old bridge, and it is understood that the new road will be made to the right of the present road, across the green paddocks, and will join the lane which runs south from the signboard at the far end of the unmetalled section.

Contrary to anticipations, game is not so very plentiful this season in the upper reaches of the Piako River, and although some big bags have been secured, generally the tally is low. There are more guns than ducks, though comparatively few of the shooters are Plainsites. Compared with last season, very few licenses have been issued on the Plains this month.
