MOTOR CAR ACCIDENT.

COLLISION AT TURNER’S HILL.

CAR CONSIDERABLY DAMAGED.

On Monday evening, about 7.30 o’clock, as Mr A. W. Hogg, a telegraph employee, was motoring into Paeroa he and the rest of his party had a narrow escape from a serious accident.

It appears that when at the top of Turner’s Hill he observed a car approaching which was zig-zagging very badly across the road, and fearing an accident he drove his car as far to one side of the road as possible. He had just stopped his car when the approaching machine dashed into his, doing a considerable amount of damage, including bending a front axle, breaking a spring and lamp, and twisting the mudguard and runningboard.

Constable McClinchy was communicated with, and he promptly arrived and arrested the driver and passenger of the car and conveyed them to the Paeroa lock-up for the night. Yesterday they were taken before, the magistrate at Waihi, and th© driver of the car, Clarie McCormick, of Hamilton, was fined £25 and costs 10s for being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-car. He was convicted and discharged for not having a license and an order was made that no license be issued to him for two years. A month was allowed in which to find the money, in default three months’ gaol. The owner of the car G. N. Brown, for being drunk was fined 20s and Court costs 10s, doctor’s expenses 10s 6d, police expenses 10s, Mr Hogg’s expenses 17s. He was allowed seven days in which to pay. These men came through from Hamilton to Te Aroha, which place they left after six o’clock. They endeavoured to procure liquor in Paeroa but were refused. They had drink, which bad been purchased at Te Aroha, in their possession when arrested.
