An admission that he spent the sum of Is 6d a week in smoking was drawn by counsel from a judgment debtor in the Wanganui Magistrate’s Court, and straightaway the Court was informed that in this weekly outlay there had been spent enough in 10 months to pay the amount owing.' But Mr J. S. Barton, S.M., said he did not see why he should cut out a man’s tobacco any more than he should sugar from his tea, and as the. man had been supporting a wife, and six children on £4 a week, with a period of unemployment thrown in, h e could not see any margin for the judgment creditor.
The teacher of the Matakanui ’ School was somewhat disturbed recently to find that a swarm of bees had taken up its abode under the eaves of the school (states the Otago Times). iThey were belligerent bees, and caused a good de.al of discomfort to the pupils, so the teacher, made application to the Education Board to have them removed. At a meeting of the board, the architect reported that the matter had been attended to and such members of the- board who had visited the school durj.ng the, bees’ occupation agreed that it was not before time—this despite the f ; Wt that six petrol tins of honey had been taken from the hive when it was taken down. Mr J. Horn, M.P., remarked that on the last occasion on which he had visited the school he’ had been badly stung. At 'this, a snout of laughter rose- from the. table. Somewhat surprised, Mr Hom observed that he could not see anything 'humorous about being stung. “Oh, otiing,” said Mr L. Sanderson, “we thought you said stunned.”
