NGATEA.

CHILDREN’S BALL.

The Ngatea District High School is to have, a school piano very shortly. This is due to Mr J. Neate, who conceived the idea of holding a children’s fancy and paper dress ball, and with the assistance of some others organised the function and carried it to a successful conclusion last Wednesday evening. Over £3O was raised, for the attendance was very large, and Mr Neate had secured donations of all the items which usually absorb the greater part of the proceeds. This sum will be subsidised at the rate of ,£1 for £1 by the State. The Hall Committee granted the free use o-f the hall, music was supplied free, by Mr Ludlow’s orchestra, the very pretty decorations were done by the Cricket Club, and the supper and numerous prizes were, given by people and business firms of Ngatea or flrjns which do business in Ngatea.

Owing to the large number of children in fancy or paper dresses it is impracticable to give a list of the dresses worn, but the prize-winners selected by popular vote were as follows : Tiny tots : Boys, Master Jimmy Reid, jockey; girls, Miss Ingram, fairy. Under te.n ydars : Girls, fancy, Miss Nancy Darlington, wireless; paper, Miss Lorna Harris, Hawaiian. Boys : fancy, Master E. Be.rtelsen, sundowner ; paper, Master Montgomery, Butterfly tea. Over ten years : Girls : fancy, Miss Una Birkenhead, Russian : paper, Miss L. McDuff, PjO. letter-box. Boys : fancy, Master V. Birkenhead, Spaniard ; paper, Master Jack Shaw, Nigger minstrel. Most original costumes : Girls, Miss K. Davies, bath robe; boys, Master R. Feri-a11,.-farm-er’s iioy. Actually, Miss Darlington (wireless) secured the most votes for the most original dress, but the committee decided to award the prize to the next competitor as Miss Darlington had already won one prize. Prizes were also given for dancing competitions as follows : Monte Carlo, Misses K. McKerohar and U. Birkenhead ; waltzing competition, 12-16 years, Una Birkenhead and Jack Shaw ; under 12, Miss K. Barriball, Victor Birkenhead, and Violet Bertelsen ; spot waltz, Misses E. Wade and E. McPherson. During the evening there were several dances for adults. On behalf of the School Committee, and also on behalf of the school teachers, Mr J. Neate was thanked for his splendid work in organising the function.
