PAEROA LIBRARY.

ANNUAL REPORT OF SECRETARY. SATISFACTORY POSITION SHOWN. At last week’s meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council the following report by the secretary (Mrs A. Thorp) was read and confirmed :— “Since the last annual report the librarian (Miss A. A. Kenny) and the secretary have catalogued and reclassified the books in the library, which now are as follows: Fiction 2000, travels 101, literature 48, useful ami fine arts 40, philosophy 7, history 98, biography 57, scientific 41, sociology 35, poetry 19, religious works 14. Total 2460 volumes.

“Although fiction is most popular with the majority of readers, the above- list shows that our library possesses a fair percentage of general literature, suitable for those who like more serious and instructive reading. In the reading room there,.is a reference library of 45 volumes free to the general public, and the tables are furnished with the latest newspapers, illustrated English papers such as the ‘Sphere,’ ‘Tatler,’ ‘Punch,’ etc., also current numbers of magazines. The Children’s Encyclopedia, consisting of ten volumes, has been purchased during'the year and is proving of great interest to the school children who consult it after school. The cost of this has rather straitened our financial resources, as being free to the public we gain no revenue in return. In addition to the before-mentioned list of books in the circulating department there is a children’s section of 150 books suitable for children’s reading. “The number of subscribers at the end of the financial year was 100. We hope to increase that number during the present year.” The balance-sheet showed receipts totalling £9O, the chief items, of which were grants . from Borough Council £2O and members’ subscriptions £55 17s sd. The expenditure totalled £BB 9s Bd, leaving a balance in hand of £1 10s lid. The main items of expenditure were librarian £3O, new books £33 8s 2d, and newspapers and magazines £lO 15s Bd. . On the motion of the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) the report was adopted, and it was decided to record the thanks and appreciation of the council to Mrs A. Thorp and Miss. Kenny for the splendid work done during the year.
