MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
BIENNIAL POLL TO-DAY.
SWIMMING BATHS LOAN.
A cold, wet morning prevailed locally for the holding of the biennial municipal elections, which take place throughout New Zealand to-day. So far as the Paeroa borough is concerned nine, candidates are in tee field for the- eight vacancies on the council, namely, Messrs P. E. Brenan, E. Edwards, F. E. Flatt. H. J. Hare, J. Pinder, E. A. Porritt, J. W. Silcoek. R. B. Dunlop, and W. Turner. The last two named are new candidates for municipal honours. The vacancy to be filled i,s consequent upon the retirement of Mr G. P. de Castro. Owing to the fact that the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) has been re-elected unopposed, there will be no election for the mayoralty. In addition to the election of councillors a ratepayers’ poll is being taken to-day on a proposal to raise a sum of £2OOO for the purpose, of acquiring a site and erecting swimming baths, including the first year’s interest and sinking fund and the cost of raising the loan. Despite the miserable conditions the returning officer (Mr W. C. Alexander) and his staff have experienced a busy morning. The fact that at midday over 200 votes had been recorded indicates that the poll is likely to be heavy, and in excess of the one in 1925. The only polling booth is at the Borough Council Chambers, in Normanby Road, and although the poll does not close until 7 p.m. voters ar® requested to vote as early as possible. By so doing the work of the returning officer and his staff will be greatly facilitated.
