LOCAL AND GENERAL.
There will be no publication of the “Gazette” on Monday next, Anzac Day.
The whole of the Borough of Paeroa was plunged into darkness on two occasions on Wednesday night owing to the failure of the electric power supply. Fortunately the periods were of brief duration, and the last, which occurred about 9 o’clock, lasted only a few minutes. On inquiry being made from the local office of the. Thames Valley Electric Power Board it was learned that the trouble had apparently occurred at Horahora, and was, therefore, beyond the control of the, boajrd. Four building permits to the total value of £1470 were granted at last night’s meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council.
Sportsmen and others, interested are cordially invited to attend the annual meeting of the Ohinemuri Acclimatisation Society, which Is to be held at Mr W. Bain’s rooms at 7.30 p.m. to-morrow.

The management committee of the Paeroa Athletic Club held a meeting last evening. The balance-sheet of the recent fireworks display showed a credit of £l5 6s 7d, of which 50 per cent, is to be devoted to the Dental Clinic Fund. Tn aceepting the cheque Mi* C. T. Mettam, representing the School Committee, thanked the club for its assistance to the cause. The committee expressed appreciation of the assistance to the undertaking by the Waihi Federal Band, Paeroa Bowling Club, Waihi-Paero.a Transport Co., Wainoni Park Fireworks Co., Mrs Pascoe, and Mr P. Jennings. The club also congratulated Mr J. Maloney on his recent successes at Taihape, Bombay, and Te Aroha sports meetings.
The need for giving access to settlers along the route of the Back Miranda Road was brought before the Minister of Public Works last week. The Hon. K. St Williapis said he thought that if there should be any money granted outside the allocation the. Back Miranda Road had a claim. Backblock settlers had a claim, in his opinion, and while it was the duty of the Government to help settlers, it was necessary for him to see that taxpayers’ interests were conserved.
The Railway Department directs attention to an advertisement appearing in this issue regarding the issue of holiday excursion tickets and train arrangements made in connection with the Waikato Racing Club’s meeting at Te Rapa racecourse on April 30' and May 4, 1927.

The provision of a crossing over the Piako River at Ngarua was advocated to the Minister of Public Wprks last week by Mr T. W- Rhodes, M.P. for that district, who pointed out the hardship of having to contend with mud roads when a metalled road could be made available at little cost by the provision of a temporary crossing. Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P., supported the request on behalf of the settlers of the Kerepeehi district and Mr McIndoe stated the case on behalf of the settlers. The Hon. K. S. Williams expressed his sympathy with backblock settlers, and said he would confer with the County Council on the relative merits, of providing a temporary crossing or metalling the river and canalside road.
A wide variety pf interesting illustrations, brings this week’s issue of the “N.2. Sporting and Dramatic Review” to a commendable standard. The Auckland Racing Club’s Easter, carnival occupies generous space, snapshots appearing of the principal events, including the Easter Handicap and the Great Northern Stakes. The Public Schools sports meeting at the Auckland Domain is the subject of an animated page, and bowlers will find special interest in the. photographs of the members of the Hataitai Bowling Rinks. The centre pages depict motor-car and speed boat thrills, and charming girl swimmers and dancers. Overseas events are well represented.
For a wager two men at Brighton, England, recently matched themselves, one against the other, to see which could smoke the most tobacco in a given time. The contest lasted for hours. The tobacco was American of medium strength. The winner, smoked two and a quarter ounces. He looked as if he had had more than enough when he put hi.s pipe down. The loser was going strong when he collapsed. Heart. Fact is, most of these American tobaccos are full of “juice” (Nicotine), and nicotine in excess plays the dickens with. heart and nerves. No tobacco is absolutely free from it, but our New Zealand grown brands contain so little that they are practically harmless. They can be smoked freely without causing any trouble. Even the doctors recommend them. Cool, sweet and fragrant, they appeal to all smokers. Try them. If you like a soothing, mild aromatic, ask for Riverhead Gold ; or if you prefer someth ini? stronger, get some Navy Cut, medium ; or Cut Plug No. 10, full flavoured.*
