RETIREMENT OF MR. P* CARTHY.

LONG' SERVICE WITH BOROUGH.

At last night’s meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council Cr. E. Edwards referred to the retirement, at his own request, of Mr P. H. Carthy, an old and valued servant to the borough. The speaker stated that Mr Cai thy had given a term of 35 years' public service in Paeroa, ten years of. which had been in the service pf the Paeroa Borough Council, and he was the oldest employee. Reference was also made to Mr Carthy’s sterling qualities as a citizen of Paeyoa, and also of the proud record of his family during the war, when Mr Carthy sent cut four sons, two of whom had laid down their lives for their King and Country. Cr. Edwards moved that the council forward a letter of appreciation of the long and faithful service rendered by Mr Carthy, and that he be granted a bonus of £lO as a slight acknowledgment and token of esteem. In seconding, Cr. F. E. Flatt saj.il that he had known Mr Carthy for over 20 years, and regarded him as an estimable citizen and a good, conscientious workman. He hoped that he would long be spared to enjoy good health and a well-earned rest. Cr. P. E. Brenan endorsed the remarks of the previous speakers, and said that he had been in close contact with Mr Carthy for many years and could say that he had always carried out his work with credit and ability. Mention was made of the fact that at one time, Mr Carthy had been acting borough foreman, and had given of his best services. In supporting the resolution Cr. Brenan said that it was a just tribute to a man who had given long and faithful service to know that the, town in which he had worked appreciated his efforts. Cr. J. W. Silcock also added his meed of praise and good wishes. The Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) said that he desired also to join witli the councillors in recording liis appreciation of Mr Carthy’s honourable record of service, and in wishini? him good health and a pleasant and happy eventide on his retirement,
