PAEROA ORPHANS.
ANNUAL MEETING OF CLUB. SUCCESSFUL SEASON PREDICTED. The second annual general meeting of the Paeroa Orphans’ Club was held on Monday night last, the president (Bro. P. Williams) presiding over an attendance of thirty members. ANNUAL REPORT. The, annual report, read by the secretary (Mr R. S. Carden), stated . “Membership : The membership now stands at 122, as against 127 at the beginning of the year. "Finance: The affaiis of the club are in a good financial position, as will be seen from the balance-sheet. According to the balance-shAt there is a debit balance of .£4 6s in the bank, but against this is to be set off cash in hand £2 16s sd, leaving a net debit balance of £1 9s 7d. The onlj outstanding liability is an amount of £44 3s, due on the. piano. The surplus of assets over liabilities is £BB 18s sd. “Your executive wish to thank the members for tliiiair promptitude in the past in remitting subscriptions, and express the earnest hope that all subscriptions will be paid promptly this year. The liability on the piano must bo paid on May 29, and early payment of subscriptions is essential to enable that liability to be met. Subscripitons fall due immediately after the annual meeting. “Season : During the past year we held seven sessions, the. opening uigat being held on June 2, with our president, Bro. P. Williams, presiding. The season may’ be regarded as having been successful and enjoyable in every respect. Its success may in a very large measure be attributed to the chairmen who at different sessions so ably occupied the chair. In particular we are indebted to Professor Maxwell Walker, who twice acted as chairman, aVid also to Archdeacon Cowie, and Mr C. E. Armstrong, both of Hamilton, who also presided. “Ladies’ Evening : Our Ladies’ Evening, which was held on October 30, was the most pleasurable, feature of the season. On this occasion the programme was provided by the Auckland Orphans’ Club, which was accompanied by its orchestra, numbering about forty. Bro. Maxwell Walker presided, and an exceptionally fine programme was provided. The special thanks of the club are due to Bro. Cater, of the Auckland Orphans’ Club, a’s he was responsible for such a, large 'number of the orchestra attending. The success of the function may-in some measure be attributed to the manner in which .members so readily rendered their assistance in the preparation of the hall and during the evening. Your executive wish to thank the members for their ready co-opera-tion, and also for the assistance Tendered on toe day following. The attention of the members is drawn to the fact that although the cost of the function had to be paid entirely out of the revenue, no levy was made on the members towards the expenses. In practically every other club it is customary to make a levy on all members towards the expense of their ladies’ evening.
“Complimentary: The executive on your behalf wish to thank the, many performers who so cheerfully rendered items at our meetings, the orchestra which contributed so largely to the success of th.c past season, to the members of kindred clubs who visited us, to our honorary auditor, and to the Press.
“In conclusion your executive wish to thank you for the support and cooperation during the past season, and extend to you their best wishes fpr a successful and enjoyable 1927 season.” <n moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet Mr L. E. Cassre's said that the club was to be congratulated on its position. He complimented the executive on the satisfactory manner in which the, affairs of the club had been carried out. Mr E. J. Shaw also offered congratulations, apd said that he desired to thank the club for having entertained members of the Hawke’s Bay Rugby touring team, and also members of the. local fire brigade. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. In moving that Mr P. Williams be elected president for the third time in succession Mr H. Poland said he did so with pleasure. Too high a tribute could not be accorded Mr Williams for the work he had done. But for his energy and whole-hearted interest the club could never have attained its present position. Several other speakers added their appreciation. The election of officers resulted aS follows : Guardian, Mr H. PolaAd ; president, Mr P. Williams ; vice-presi-dents, Messrs W. Marshall, C. E. Andrews, P. E. Brenan, F. E. Flatt, E. W. Porritt, A. W. Alley, and V. J. Innes ; secretary Mr R. S. Carden ; treasurer, Mr A. F. Ste.edman ; auditor, Mr G. E. Allen. SERVICES APPRECIATED. Following the conclusion of the formal business of the meeting Bro. C. E. Andrews moved a vote of, thanks in favour of the guardian, president, secretary, and committee for the capable management they hd displayed in conducting the affairs of the club. A special tribute was accorded the president and secretary for the splendid work they had done. With reference to the ladies’ night, the executive was deserving of special congratulation. He had been a member of Savage clubs in the principal centres. Being kindred to the Orphans’ clubs, ladies’ nights were held, but despite the resources of those clubs and other advantages enjoyed he could not recollect any ladies’ nights being so successful as those provided by the Paeroa Orphans’ Club. In returning thanks on behalf of the executive and himself the president expressed confidence that the coming season would be as equally successful as former ones. He hoped that the first session would be held on May 19, of which the members would receive, due notice.
