It was stated at the householders’ annual meeting at the Paeroa District High School last night that the increased attendance in the primary department had raised the status f of the school. Recently, however, the attendance had fallen back, and unless the roll number could be increased there was a likelihood of a reduction in status and the removal of an assistant teacher
The local tennis club will .close its season on Saturday next, and to mark the occasion will play a tournament during the afternoon between all players present. AU members, are urged to attend to make the function a success. - .
The ..Public Works Department’s steam suction dredge, which has been engaged in dredging operations on the Waihou River, near the site of the Hauraki Bridge, Kopu, returned to the Puke, Paeroa, last night. The huge vessel, which was piloted up the river by Captain R. E. Thorp, reached the Puke safely after a lengthy overhaul and clean-up.
The popular river steamer Taniwha has taken up her running in the Auckland-Paeroa service. The vessel has just come off the slip at Auckland, where, she underwent a thorough overhaul an clean-up.
Applications by unemployed men for work on the Waihl-Whangamata road are being freely received uy SeniorSergeant Maclean, thq Waihi agent of the Public Works Department, and the Labour Bureau. Mr Park, late overseer of the Public Works Department at Gisborne, is in charge of the works.
The Hauraki Plains County Council conducted the business of its monthly meeting yesterday in record time, the whole proceedings lasting only a few minutes. As it was essential that a meeting should be held to pass the accounts, and particularly the wages for payment, and as the only time available was when the Cabinet Ministers were having tea, the report of the engineer was taken as read and referred to the Works Committee for attention. General matters, except those of a contentious matter, were referred tp the works or finance, committees, and the accounts were passed for payment - subject to certification by the clerk, engineer, and county chairman. A tender for work on Fisher’s drain, Netherton, was accepted, and a resolution of sympathy with Or. J. C. Miller who was seriously ill as the result of a heart attack at Thames on Tuesday was carried. The councillors then hurried to Kerepeehi to interview the Ministers on a very important matter which time had precluded being introduced before. Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure For Influenza Colds.
