In answer to Mr W. J. Hall at Monday's meeting of the Thames Hospital Board the chairman (Mr AV. E. Hale) stated that the rules provided that no patient should be admitted te hospital without the. certificate of a medical practitioner, with the exception of accident or other urgent cases.

The Wellington tram system shows a profit of £16,332 for the financial year ended March 31, .and ’buses a loss of £9820. The trams carried 43,000,000' people.

At Monday’s meeting of the Thames Hospital Board Mr C. W. Kennedy drew attention to the fact that the Thames Plunket Society was taking steps to raise funds to purchase a motor-car for the Plunket nurse. He thought that the time was more than ripe when the board should do something towards getting a car for the district nurse to natives, Miss Jarrett, Paeroa. The chairman (Mr AV. E. State mine No. 2 at the Liverpool colliery at Greymouth, was idle yesterday. The men declared the weather too wet for them to travel from the middle break to the mine entrance, a distance of 18 chains. No. 1 mine was working, although men in it have 1% mile further to walk.

Dale at Thursday night’s meeting of the AVaihi Borough Council, when he moved as follows: — “That this council respectfully suggests to the Hon. the Minister in charge of elections that in future the polling for the election of Licensing Committees in various parts of the Dominion should be held simultaneously with the elections for members of the House of Representatives, and that this council further suggests that the expenditure thus saved could be used with advantage to provide work for the unemployed.” The motion was carried unanimously.

For exposing lice-infe.sted sheep for sale at tire Te Awamutu saleyards on Marcli 4 Archibald Emmett, a dealer at Ohaupo, was prosecuted by Inspector Melrose at the Te Awamutu Court last week. Emmett said he bought the sheep at Cambridge, the previous. Monday, and was then assured that they were clean. He was fine.fi £l, with costs 12s. Another dealer, J. B. Patterson (who did not appear), was also charged wtih a similar offence on March 10. The inspector »said the sheep had been recently dipped, but apparently the solution used was ineffective. A lint; of £1 and costs was imposed.

When certain persons from Pio Pio appeared at the Magistrate’s Court, Te Kuiti, on Tuesday in answer to charges of being on billiard saloon premises after hours, considerable surprise was expressed at the nature of the charge. It was quite, evident front remarks passed outside the Court that there were even members of the legal profession who we.re in ignorance of the fact that being on billiard saloon premises after 11 p.m. constituted an offence.—Chronicle.
