MOTOR CAR CAPSIZES.
ACCIDENT ON TE AROHA ROAD.
MACHINE DIVES INTO DRAIN
A sorry locking derelict, a five-seat-er .1925 model Essex motor car, is at present attracting the interest of passersby at Mr R. L. McClinchy’s local garage. It appears .that the owner of the ear, Mr Isaac Tangitu, of Tauranga, was returning from the races, and on reaching the Bank of New Zealand corner he mistook the road, and turned ever the Criterion bridge. They proceeded along the Te Arolia Road for some distance before realising that a mistake in the roads had been made. It was decided to retrace their tracks, and a point near the.intersection of Mill Road, with the Te Aroha Road was selected as the turning point. In negotiating the turn, apparently the width of the road was misjudged and as a consequence the car slipped bodily into the deep roadside drain, where it remained firmly wedged between the banks. Fortunately Mr Tangitu and his brother who were the only passengers, were able to crawl out unhurt.
The car, however, is badly damaged, the hood, running-beards, mudguards, and front axle and wheels being bent and twisted cut o'f all recognition. So far as can be ascertained at present the engine is not seriously damaged, and an extraordinary feature is that the windscreen is not even cracked.
It is understood that the car is covered by insurance.
