A petition requesting tlie Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) to again offer, his, services 'for a further term is being circulated, and is being widely signed. To enable those who wish to support the petition copies have been left at J. P. Gamble’s, D. Le.ach’s, W. Fleming and Son’s and at the “Gazette” Office, where signatures may be attached.
A visitor to Paeroa yesterday expressed his surprise that a progressive town, like Paeroa should lack swimming baths. On being informed that the Borough Council h.ad the matter in hand and intended to submit a poll asking for authority to raise a loan in April next, the visitor replied : “I am glad to hear it. I wish I were a ratepayer and could give the project a push along.
By order passed by' the United Fire Brigades’ Association of New Zealand in conference at Gisborne last inontn the titles o'f captain and lieutenant have become obsolete, in so far as the Paeroa brigade is concerned, and in 'future t.he titles of the local officers will be Superintendent W. Moore and deputy-Superintendent E. Moore.
An expression of practical sympathy with tlie relatives of the victims ol the two coalmine disasters which occurred in England last week has been made b,y Mr F. W. Burley, a. wellknown resident cif Hamilton, in a tangible manner. He has instructed his bank to cable to the Prime Minister of England (Mr Stanley Baldwin*), conveying his sympathy t i the bereaved relatives, and for-
warding £so’o for tiie relief of the dependants of those who were lost in the disasters.
Constable McClinchy is at present on sick leave, and Constable J. Ros 1 liorciugh, of Waihi, is doing relieving duty at Paeroa.
A one-ton Chevrolet truck owned by Mr W. Turner, of Turua, and used by him on metal carting work at Pukahu Road, Netherton, was destroyed by fire on the Turua-Netherton road near the Kerepeehi corner early on Sunday evening. The cause is, attributed to back-firing.
With the approach of the municipal elections (Mayor and councillors) it may be advisable to state who, are eligible to vote. Briefly, the position is this : All ratepayers and other persons who have been in the Dominion for a clear twelve months and resident in Paeroa 'for three months pri<>r to the date of tlie election (April 27 next) are entitled to vote, provided they are on the municipal roll. It behoves all those, therefore, who desire to record their votes to be sure that they are on the roll. Forms for enrolment are obtainable from sitting members o'f the Borough Council and froim the town clerk.
There was an unusually large number i f legal luminaries present at tlie monthly sitting of the Paeroa Magistrate’s Court yesterday. In addition to live local solicitors there were members of tlie profession from Auckland, Hamilton, Te Aroha, Waihi, and Thames.
