ELECTRIC PUMPING.

HAURAKI PLAINS PROJECT. POWER BOARD’S REPLY. At Tuesday’s meeting of the Thames Valley Electric Power; Board a letter was received from Mr R. Miller, Waitakaruru, on b-half of a number of settlers, advising that consideration had been given by the settlers te the installation of an electric pumping scheme. Information was s >ught as to the cost of a pump capable of dealing with approximately 300,000 1 gallons of water an hour, installed, and including floodgate and motor complete. It was desirable to have a pump capable of lifting .about 5 .feet, and 'forcing t,he water three chains. The board was asked to advise what the running costs would amount te an hour, and would the settlers be charged for power on the flat rate or meter basis, and if the payment for the whole installation could be spread °ver a long period, such as a rate over approximately 500 acres of land.

In reply the board’s engineer (Mr N. G. McLeod) forwarded a plan of a suitable pump which would cost about £235 to’instal, the price not including t,he cost of the shed* foundations discharge pipe, 'non-return valve if syphon action was provided, or service line, but including complete cost of’ motor, pump, and switch-board, all erected on foundations provided, and the necessary cabling inside the shed. The cost ° £ ' the service line would be £4 a chain. With reference to forcing the water 'for a distance of three chains, t,he engineer pointed out that the better proposition would be to raise the water six feet, and then plume for the three chains, The boarfl did not contract, to install the floodgate, but it would construct lines on public roads, and consumers would be required to pay fcr on private roads or property. The motor working at full piessure would consume about 20 units an hour. The board could not agree to the pump running ever the peak hours. As regarded Payment for installation, the board wa3 unable t/> accept the proposal of a rate, and it would be necessary for the settlers to make arrangements with the drainage board, whose guarantee of payment to ,the board would be sufficient. In all, it would take about ’four months to order and complete the installation. A resolution was passed approving of the reply sept and leaving the matter in the hands of .the engineer and manager to pursue further.
