HAURAKI PLAINS TENNIS
THE HANDICAP TOURNAMENTS. NUMEROUS ENTRIES. The draw for the various hnndkap tournaments organised by the Hauraki Plains Tennis Association was made on Monday evening by Messrs. Frecklington, McMillan, Mahoney, and Vowles. There were 37 entries for the men’s singles, 23 for the men’s doubles, 20 for the ladies’ singles, and '/nine for the ladies’ doubles. Owing tc the largeness of the number of entries great difficulty was experienced in arranging the play. To get to the semi-finals 73 matches are necessary, and Tor this number .to be played in one day at least eight cour ts would be required. At Ngatea there - are only four courts, and at the other centres the maximum is three courts. Oji account of the travelling it is no: desirable to play on two clubs’ courts on one day, or play the ladies at one place and the men at another; yet owing to t,he length of the association’s programme for the rest of the season there does not appear to ire sufficient Saturdays to allot many to this competition. There are the finals of the championship competition to be played, and a representative match has been arranged with the Franklin Association for March 26 at Ngatea. .Some of the players could play on a week-day, while some would only be free on a Saturday afternoon. It was decided that the ladies’ singles and doubles and 12 of the - men’s matches should be played on Saturday next at Ngatea, commencing at 10 a.m. sharp.
