NGATEA. CHURCH FETE. “ 0, Come and be joyful I” said the screen advertisements, and the people o'f Hauraki Plains came to the Ngatca Hall in large numbers on Wednesday evening and were joyful. The function was a, fete organised by the Presbyterian Church Ladies’ Guild, of which Mrs McDuff is presijAent and Mrs Flavel secretary, and purpose was to raise ’funds for the building of a church at Ngatea. During t,he afternoon brisk business was done at the stalls and by those in charge of the competitions, and during the evening the goods then remaining unsold were disposed of by auction, Mr J. Neate being the auctioneer. Mrs Manktelow, Miss Davidson, and Miss Taylor were in charge of the sewing stall, .the Misses Miller, and Miss Candy attended at, the sweets stall, and the produce stall was conducted by Mrs'Clark and Mrs Royden. While the stallholders and those in charge of the competitions went about their tasks during the evening the young folks danced to music supplied by Messrs Ludlow and King, and the elder ones played progressive euchre on the stage. The euchre prizes were wop by Mrs B, McMillan and Mr D. Williamson. In thanking those who ihad contributed to the success of the fete the Rev. Charteris. mentioned that the takings totalled almost £6O. NETHERTON. CHURCH BAZAAR. For the purpose c f raising fuilds for the building of an Anglican Church in Netherton the ladies of the district have banded themselves into a ladies’ guild, and yesterday their first bazaar was held. If the future efforts oT the guild meet with- an equal degree of success the object should soon be attained, fpr the function was perhaps the best organised and best conducted bazaar held in the district for a long time, The attendance was satisfactory, and brisk business was done from the time the 'function was opened by Mr C. N. O’Neill, of Paeroa, until late in the evening, when the few re-1 maining articles were auctioned. The interior o,f the hall presented a very pretty appearance as the various stallholders had competed for a prize f. r the most attractive stall. This was awarded by Mrs P. R. Henry, o'f Turua, to the cookery stall, in the ►--charge of Mrs Wakeham and Mrs Death, but tjie judging must have been difficult, as the decorations of all the stall’s were very effective. Misses Heappey and Matthews haf scope for decorative talent at the sweets stall, and they produced a charming effect, which was not possible at the produce or plain andfancy sewing corners, where Mesdames Young. Miller, T. Johnson-, Vowles, and Miss Vowles aimed to produce a pleasing show without hiding their wares, A pretty effect was achieved by the Misses Whisker and Halligan with their Christmas tree, but Mrs, T. Vowles and Miss Railing demanded a sixpence to see the “beauties” in tlheir "art gallery.” In t,he hall supperroom Mesdames Fisher, Sargant, and Johnson, and Miss Simes depended on the delectability of their wares rather ■ than to scenic effects for the attraction of customers to the tea-rooms Another attractive corner was t,he fish ponds, where the Misses Miller collected the small coins from eager youngsters. The usual competitions and games of skill associated with charity bazaars were organised and pushed with untiring energy' by a band o>f. irresistible canvassers. Among the prize winners were the following: Hatrimming, Mr E. Johnson; peas in bottle ,(2158), Miss de Stigler. 2150 ; length o'f string (16yds Ift Bin), Mr R. Smith, 16yds 2ft; ladies’ nail-driving, Mrs Reddy; men’s nail-driving, Mr J. Wakeham; ladies’ sawing, Mrs T. Vowles, Splendid entries were received for the cooking competitions, and the ■towards of the judge, Mrs Bagnall, of Turua were as follows : Sponge, with butter, Mrs Vercoe l, Mrs T. Vowles 2; sponge, without butter, Mrs W. Harold 1, Miss Matthews 2; sponge roll, Mrs T. Vowles 1, Mrs Fraser 2; Pikelets Mrs T. Vowles 1 ; scones, Mrs Vercoe 1. Miss Matthews 2, Mrs. Miller 3 ; shortbread, Mrs T. Vowles 1, Mrs Tregowarth 2 ; seed-cake, Miss Miller 1, Mrs Tregowarth 2 ; fruit cake, Mrs j’. Wilson 1, Mrs Bourne 2; gingerbread, Master J, Miller 1, Mrs W. Potter 2 ; bread, Mrs Epps 1, Mrs Heappey 2 ‘ Walker, alias Taylor, M'Lean, Spencer, Bruce, Allan, Desmond, real name is Walton, has again had his 'few week’s freedom, but returned to gaol for Christmas (says the Brit- .. ish Australian and New Zealander). Unfortunately, Walton will never forget that he is 'from Ne-w Zealand, ami every time he ’appears, in court to answer the charge of obtaining money by false pretences the fact that he is a New Zealander comes out in evidence. Indeed, he seldom departs from the story that he is a New Zealand 'farmer of considerable means who is temporarily embarrassed by the loss o'f a wallet containing £94. The number of pounds seldom vanes. On this last occasion he went about obtaining orders to view' flats. On being arrested and searched he had in his pocket fifty separate orders to view relatively 100 houses. From an ©wner of a flat he obtained £3, and on this matter he was arrested, appeared at the Westminster Court, and was sentenced to the usual six months imprisonment.
