PAEROA STOCK SALE.

AN AUSPICIOUS OPENING. SUCCESSFUL MARKETING. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency " Co., Ltd., held its opening sale at the A. and P. Society’s stockyards, Paeroa, yesterday, there being a full- yarding of cattle and sheep and a good number of pigs. There was a large attendance of buyers and (farmers of the district, and practically all the stock was sold either by auction or by private treaty, the ruling market prices being fully maintained. Yesterday’s sale gives an indication that the Paeroa stock sale will shortly become a regular event of importance. A successful stock sale is of mutual benefit to the firm conducting it,, the farmers of the district, and the business community of the centre in which it is held, and it is therefore generally hoped that yesterday’s successful sale will be the forerunner <‘f many others equally or more successful. The tendency throughout the Dominion has of late been to centralise stock sales, so as to secure such a yarding as will attract large numbers of outside buyers and minimise the overhead costs of the auctioneering firm. Thus, consistent with this policy, the commencement of stock sales in Paeroa has been made. Paeroa is the natural centre for a wide area which is rapidly becoming more closely settled, and the need for saleyar.ds nearer than Hikutaia. Waihi, Ngatea, or Turua has become acute. The Waihi Plains, Waikino Waitawheta, and Waitekauri are rapidly developing into closely settled 'farming districts and are inadequately served at present. In dairying districts the nature of stock sales varies with the season, but the bulk of the offerings throughout t,he year are beef, and it is therefore' essential. if keen competition in this line is to result, that there should l- e a good attendance of export buyeis and outside butchers. These men "ill attend sa long as there is sufficient offering to make their trip worth while.

In Mr D. G. McMillan the Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. has an active representative who will do his utmost to make t.he Paeroa sale a regular success. If farmers desiring stock, or having stack for sale, will communicate with him they will be helping themselves and also the district in which they live. Sales will be held monthly in 'future, probably on the day following the regular sale at Ngatea:— Prices realised yesterday were as follows :—

Pigs,—Weaners, 14s to 17s ; boars, £2 2s ; sows in pig, £5 ss. Dairy Cows.—Best, from £6 ta £7 10s. others £5 to £6 5s ; inferior £4 to £4 15s.
