HAURAKI PLAINS TOURNAMENT.
FIRST AND SECOND ROUNDS.
The Hauraki Plains Tennis Association’s championship tournament was commenced at the Ngatea Club’s courts on Saturday last. The .weather, was good except for a strong wind, and the courts were in satisfactory order.
■ Play commenced at 10.30 a.m. and c ntinued without intermission until about 6 p.m., the two rounds of the ladies’ and men’s singles and the men’s doubles being almost, completed. The semi-finals and finals of the competition will be played on the same date as the finals of the association’s competitions. As there were only k'.ur entries for the ladies’ doubles no matches were played on Saturday. There was a fair attendance of spectators at the courts, and some good play was witnessed, though on. the whole the tennis was not up to championship standard. This was not expected, as many players whose chances of getting into the finals were very remote had entered the competitions Tor the sake of the valuable experience of playing strong players who were bent on winning. The outstanding game was the singles between W. W. Averill, of Tai’ua, and G. L. Griffiths, of Waitakaruiu. Fast hard play with long rallies characterised the 32 games in the three sets, and the evenness of th.e players was demonstrated by the fact that 14 games went to deuce, and that the total of each player’s points showed a difference of only 15. Griffiths won two love games and Averill one. Details oi the scores are as follows-: Men’s singles.— First round : W. W. Averill beat J. Duffy, 6—0 1 , 6—2; G. L. Griffiths beat F. C.
