OFFICIAL CEREMONY ON LAWN.

An auspicious event in the history of the Hikutaia Croquet Club even-* tuated on Wednesday night, when the official ceremony of switching on the electric light on the croquet lawn was performed. In the presence of a large gathering, including a number of visitors from adjacent clubs, the president of the Hikutaia Bowling, Croquet, and Tennis Clubs, Mr W. H. Alley, extended a hearty welcome to those who attended. He trusted that the novelty of playing croquet under elecric light would appeal to the members, and that the game would increase in popularity, and that many happy and enjoyable games would be played.

After the president of the Croquet Club (Mr G. Avery) had paid a tribute to all who had assisted with the work of raising money to provide the electric light for the lawn, he called on Mrs Avery to switch on the light. This ceremony having been duly carried out amidst enthusiastic applause croquet was played until 19 o'clock. Those taking part in the game spoke eulogistically of the conditions prevailing, and it was generally agreed that the lighting was very satisfactory.

For those who' did not desir.e to play croquet small tables were arranged in the park and cards and other games played. During the evening a sumptuous supper was served by t,be ladies, and the greatest hospitality was l extended to all. BOWLING CLUB. The occasion was availed of by the bowlers to play an inter.-club maten with Paeroa for the Alley Buttons After an interesting contest, Hikutaia won by 'four points. The teams were: Hikutaia, R. Morrison, G. Avery, E. Elliott, H. S. Valentine (skip) 23, v. W. Smith, J. McDonald, J. Brocket, A. Finnie (skip) 19. A friendly game was also played between the two clubs, but in this instance the visitors won by 10 points, the teams being : Hikutaia, Gubb, M. Morrison, A. R. Robinson,. C. W. Winder (skip) 13, v. G. H. Taylor, W. McCullay, F. Hayward, W. Purdie (skip) 23.
