PAEROA BOROUGH.

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING. 1 ROUTINE business; The regular monthly meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council was held last Thursday night, His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) presiding over the following: Crs. P. E. Brenam, F. E. Flatt,. E. Edwards, H. J. Hare, G. P. de Castro, E. Porrittj, J. Pinder, and the assistant town clerk (Misgi A. J. Butler). . KERBSIDE PUMPS. The borough solicitor wrote with reference to the council’s inquiry as to the terms of the bond required in connection with the. kerbside petrol pumps erected in. the borough. As the result of inquiries it was found that the bonds ,4’ere now recognised as an insurance risk, and were underwritten by any local insurance office. The Mayor intimated that the matter had been attended to by .the town clerk, and one policy had been actually lodged with the. council. Cr. Edwards suggested that the owners be advised of the position, and requested to act. SANITARY INSPECTOR.

The District Medical Officer of Health wrote requesting the council to approve of the appointment o’f Mr F. O. York as the borough sanitary inspector, in place of. Mr H. H. Martindale, who has transferred to Rotorua.

On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Edwards, is was resolved that the council place on record its appreciation of the services rendered by Mr Martindale, his attention to duty and his unifailing courtesy and general manner making association with him in public work a teal pleaure, and that this resolution be 'forwarded to Inspector Martindale with t.he. council’s best wishes for his prosperity in his new alsci that Mr York be accepted as the council’s sanitary inspector. USE OF SEWER VENTS.

Messrs. Gannon and Worley, engineers, in reply to the council advised that it was not absolutely essential to have an air vent at the highest point of each branch, and the more vents in a system, the (sweeter would be the sewers. If there were sufficient funds it was strongly recommended to put the vents in . It was resolved .that the engineer’s recommendation be accepted, and that it be given effect to. Mrs R. S. Carden applied for a sewerage connection to her Hill Street property, and sought information as to the location o’f the buchan trap. A similar'application was also received from J. R. Pratt, Hill Street.

C. Handley also applied for ,a connection and buchan trap an his, property in Kennedy Street. The. Mayor statjed . that it would mean an extension of about four chains to give effect .to the requests. . Cr. Edwards said that the locality was a growing one, and he moved that an estimate be obtained of the cast of making the extension. Cr. de Castro drew attention that the matter of extension o’f sewerage in the area of the old railway station had been deferred on a previous occasion. He thought that the wihol® matter of sewerage extensions should be reported upon. It was resolved to obtain an estimate for the various extensions required. SWIMMING BATHS. The lOhinemuri County Council, in reply to the Borough Council’s inquiry, wrote stating that the request for an extra water supply in the event otethe proposal to erect swimming baths being carried had been referred to the water supply commit-' tee for its consideration and report. The Mayor moved that the letter be referred to the. special swimming baths, committee ,withi power to act. Seconded by Cr. Edwards, and carried. RAILWAY SEWERAGE. The district engineer, N.Z. Railways wrote asking the amount of tthe annual charge, if any, that would be levied for the sewerage connection at, the stationmaster’s! residence. The same office also wrote advising that it was desirous of connecting the railway settlement houses with the borough sewerage system,, and requesting that the council push on with its share of the work as much as possible. The. Mayor said a reply had been sent advising that there was a charge for the connection ,but that there would be an additional charge for water. GOVERNOR-GENERAL’S VISIT. The Ohinemuri County Council forwarded a letter congratulating the Mayor and councillors on the excellent arrangements made, for the reception of the Governor-General and party at, Paeroa on December 9. The letter was received with appreciation. OIL COMPANY’S BUILDINGS. The chief inspector of explosives, Wellington, wrote advising that the proposed layout for a pumphouse and motorshed at the. Puke was satisfactory to the department, provided that ample ventilation was installed in the pumphouse. PRINTING OF BALANCE-SHEETS. The Auditpr-General, Wellington, wrote as follows :— • “I. have to inform you that the. Audit Office cannot regard the typewritten copies of the balance-sheets for the two years ended March 31, 1926, forwarded by yen as printed balance-sheets within the provisions of the regulations under the Municipal Corporations Act,, 1920. I would direct your attention to regulation 55 under the said Act, but before taking any action in the matter I shall be pleased to receive from you any explanation you may wish to submit atei to why the balance-sheets were n<’t printed, as required.” The Mayor said that the town cleik had taken the step .to save the expense of printing the balance-sheet. It, was resolved to receive the letter and refer it to the town clerk.

APPLICATIONS FOR CROSSINGS. An application far a crossing to one of the oil compapy depots at Paeroa was made by Mr W. W. Scott. A similar application was received from Mr R. I. Roberts to his property in Dulcie Street, and also by the manager Of Wallace Supplies, Ltd., to their property in Willoughby Street. The applications were granted subject to the work being done t.o the satisfaction of the foreman. ACCESS SOUGHT. Mr M. E. Hobart wrote drawing attention to the fact that there was n° means of access to his property in upper Willoughby Street other than by crossing a small gully. As he desired to erect a house on the section, a suggestion was made that the council should pravide an access by placing a culvert across the gully.

Cr. Hare said the position of the section was rather hopeless. It appeared that access would cost more than the section was worth. Cr. Edwards said he believed the writer was desirous of selling the sectian, and he was opposed to giving an access under the circumstances. Cr. Har© agreed that it would be a costly proposition to give access.

Cr. Pinder said it would cost a lot to fill in .the gully. Cr. Brenan said it was not necessary to discourage the applicant. He moved that the matter be referred to the works committee for a report. Cr. Edwards moved as an amendment that the council regretted that at the present time it had not the money to give effect to the request. The amendment was carried on the voices.
