THE MEAT WE EAT.
FOOD FOR THE FLIES. POSITION HARD TO REMEDY. That buV'hers should be forced to cover up meat in their shops and keep it away from the fly, was the opinion expressed by a medical man to a representative of the Wellington "Dominion" on Monday. “There, is no doubt," he said, “<<hat the way meat is allowed to be exposed in shops is a disgrace. Big. flies cap be seen buzzing around the food we eat, .and no official notice is taken. The. fly is the cause of lots of sickness, and if the meat we eat is always put in FJs way the fault is ours." On the other hand, butchers when spoken to about the fly trouble say ■ijhat if the meat goes, bad it is unavoidable. “Most of us keep the fans going, and da our best to drive the insects away,” said one of them. “However, hot weather is always bad for a ng and we cannot really cover up the ™ mea't'. Apart from the trouble it would give ufei to do so, the public could not see what ta buy.” The reporter made an inspection of several butchers’ shops in thte city. In most of them he found flies hanging about the meat, which was exposed. One butcher told him it could not be helped; there was no remedy .for it. "Flies like meat,” he said X w ith a smile, so there you are. Anyway if people had any sense th ? y would very little meat at all in like this.”
