WRECK OF THE MANAIA.

SALVAGE NEARING COMPLETION. PROFIT TO PURCHASERS. Just ov<Xr seven months have passed since ,the Northern Steam Ship Company’s steamer Manaia, then on the Auckland-Tauranga run, was wrecked on Slipper Island, and the remains of she vessel still lie gripped by the rocks, but in a slightly altered position to that when she went ashore. During the progress of a syorm the steamer was lifted from the spot where she struck and carried a chaiji or two further up on the rocks. Shortly after the mishap the vessel was bought by Messrs Cory-Wright Bros., who have quarters at Mercury Bay within easy distance of Slipper Island, for a nominal sum, and since then .the purchasers have, as circumstances permitted, been engaged in salvage work on the wreck. They have now transferred practically everything moveable to the shore, including steam winches, cordage, spare, and a quantity of lead. The decking, however, has still to be taken up. A Waihi launch party visiting Slipper Island last week got to within a chain or two ot the wreck at low water and found that the greater part of the. vessel was high out of the water. It is understood tyiat although the salvage work has been a costly business a substantial profit will be made, and in this connection it is said that the lead alone realised' in the neighbourhood of the amount paid for the wrecked vessel.
