WORKS IN THE COUNTY.

REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE. JANUARY A BUSY MONTH. The following report for the month of January was submitted ■‘’o Thursday’s meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council by the acting engineer (Mr L. E. Shaw) “Having obtained the services o¥ a driver for the roller, the tjop course Clarkin’s metal contract at Waitoki has been rolled and blinded. “During the Christmas holidays, while the road roller was. housed at the council’s yard, the opportunity was takQn to have a 'few necessary repairs done to the machine, and it has since proceeded to Thames Road to continue the scarifying—a distance of, 30 chains having been done —bu’ti owing to the dry state of the road the w n rk had to bg discontinued until conditions were more favourable. “The. whole of the iron swing-span df the Ngahina bridge has been thoroughly scraped and painted, and all underneath bolts tightened. A number of boards in the longitudinal decking on the bridge will want renewing at a very early datp., and therefore I would ask your council to authorise the purchase o'f about 150 feet of 9in by 2in hardwood for this purpose. The Main Highways Board and the Hauraki Plains County will contribute their proportion towards the whole cost of this work.

“On the Kopu-Paeroa main highway a county boundary notice, board has been erected between the Ohinemuri County and Thames County, and also one on the Pokejio-Waih’i highway between the Ohinemuri County and the. Hauraki Plains County. ■

“It was found necessary to make a slight alteration in the position of the new bridge on Trig Road (Waihi riding), on account of the soft nature of the creek bed. The new site is Tour feet up-stream, and the bridge is now on a solid rock foundation.

“It was also necessary to do a little more filling on the Old Tauranga road (contract No. 584) Gn account of the storm-wtaer during the holidays rvashing out 'the filling that was ready for metalling.

“Several of the bridges in the county are wanting repairs immediately, and as I have the opportunity of getting suitable timber for tSHR work from Aitken and Son, Karangahake, at a reduced rate, I wGuld ask the council’s permission to secure about 500 ft, made up of 9in by 2in, 9in by 3in, 12in by 2in, and 12in by 3in, to be held in stock and used as required.—Authority was given to purchase the timber required. “The council’s truck is in need o'f urgent repair, and as it is practically impossible t.o do without it I would ask that something bei done in the malted. —It was resolved to purchase two new wheels, and the engineer was authorised 'm have such repairs Effected as were necessary.

“I understand that Mr Devcich, Hikutaia, is making application for an allowance of 30'S, few having cleaned out the drain along his boundary on the Kopu-Paeroa main road and tjhe Settlement Road last autumn. I may say that I inspected this work, and it has been carried out satisfactorily.

“Ordinary maintenance has been carried -Oiut, as usual, but owing to the continued wet weather and excessive traffic during the holidays the main roads became very pot-holed in places. This work is now in hand and is beingcarried out as expeditiously as possible.” The report was adopted.
