HIGHEST READING SINCE 1925.

Summer was with us with a vengeance yesterday, judging by the conditions that prevailed locally. Early yesterday morning a heavy pal) of fog hung o,ver the town, which is rather an unusual happening for this season o'f the year. However, before 9 o’clock the sun had penetrated the clouds, and shone down mercilessly for the rest of the day. At noon the thermometer registered 84 degrees, in the. shade, and people found the heat most oppressive. During the early afternoon a slight westerly breeze prevailed, but it was of little effect so far as cooling influence was concerned. By 4 o'clock tlie thermometer, was registering 87 degrees. It is interesting to state that this is the highest temperature recorded at Paeroa f T two years. Towards the end of January, 1925, the temperature rose to 89 degrees.

Verx few people were about the streets yesterday afternoon, and what few of the fair sex that were in the streets were lightly clad and provided with sunshades. The majority of motorists, were to be observed driving without, coats, while travellers, by the trains doffed both coat and wr.isfa.oat in several instances. Had the loan poll for swimming baths at Paeroa been taken yesterday it is- safe to say that it would have been carried by an overwhelming majority. The swimming pools, at Tarariki Creek and the Komata received Tull quotas of both youngsters and adults yesterday, while at the. Puke more than one Public Works employee was seen to seek recreation and refreshment in the river after the day’s work. Venders of ice cream and other cooling delicacies report, brisk sales during the day.
