TRAFFIC CONTROL.
POSITION OBTAINING AT PAEROA. COUNCIL TO TAKE ACTION. The question of control of traffic in the main streets was introduced by Cr. P. Pinder at last night’s Borough Council meeting. Cr. Pinder said that he had waited to give one of .the s'enior councillors an opoprtunity to bring the matter forward, but nothing had been done. The position so far as the main streets were concerned was becoming positively dangerous. He drew attention to the careless and haphazard manner in which cars were left standing in the streets. The traffic regulations and signals were rarely observed, and pedestrians and cyclists were forced to give way to motor-cars, besides running serious risks daily. He did not think such a state c f affairs should be allowed to continue, and in the interests of the safety of all concerned an inspector should be appointed and the regulations enforced. The Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) agreed, and said that the foreman was the council’s inspector, but unfortunately his time was fully occupied with other duties. Cr. Pinder said that if the foreman was paid for the work he should carry out t,he duties. Cr. Flatt objected to the remark, and said that the foreman had only received a formal appointment as inspector. it was not reasonable to expect him to give time to controlling traffic when t,here was so much else claiming his attention and time. The Mayor said that the police had been asked to co-operate with the council in the matter of street traffic control, but apparently little help could be expected. He agreed that the matter ha J reached a serious ■stage and something would have, to be dons at once. A serious accident was inevitable under the existing state of affairs. If offending motorists were prosecuted and the council teok up a definite attitude the position would soon improve. The matter was referred to the Works, Committee, with power to take such steps as were considered desirable te enforce the traffic regulations:
