PAEROA BOROUGH.
MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING. ROUTINE BUSINESS. The first meeting this year of the Paeroa Borough Council was held last night, His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) presiding over the following : Crs. P. E. Brenan, E. Edwards, F. E. Flatt, J. W. Silcock, H. J. Hare, J. Pinder, G. P. de Castro, E, A. Porritt, and the town clerk (Mr W. C. Alexander). APPRECIATION ACKNOWLEDGED. The General Post Office, Wellington, wrote acknowledging the council’s letter of appreciation o'f the loan of flags on the occasion of the visit of the Governor-General to Paeroa. REPAIRS TO STREET. A Wellington oil and benzine company wrote drawing attention to the bad state- of the main streets in the borough and requesting that repairs be effected to the company’s depot. The Mayor stated that it was Hill Street that was referred to, and he explained that the surface was being kept in as good a condition as possible. Owing to the nature of the sub-grade and the weather, it had not been possible to carry out the work of further improvement. OLD GAS LAMPS. An Auckland firm wrote offering to purchase the existing gas lamps at a sum of £5. The offer Was declined. The ’ Mayor said that when time permitted it would be advisable to collect the standards, many of which were in good order and could be used as supports for arc lights. - WILLOUGHBY STREET PATH. Mr J. P. Gamble drawing attention to the growth of blackberry on the footpath fronting his residence in Willoughby Street. Owing to the growth, the writer stated that he had been compelled to engage a man to clear the area, and as a result he wished to withdraw his offer of £5 made previously for the purpose of putting the footpath in order. It was agreed to receive the letter, and that permission be granted to grass the frontage subject to the approval of the council. On the motion o'f Cr. Flatt it was decided to compliment Mr Gamble on the good work done and enterprise shown. He hoped that other ratepayers would be imbued with a desire to improve the frontages of their properties. REGISTERED PLUMBERS. The Department or Heath forwarded a list of plumbers who had qualified and registered under- the Act Of 1912. EXTERMINATION OF RATS. The Department of Health brought under notice the necessity of waging constant warfare against the increase of rats in the borough area, and urged that all measures be taken for the extermination o'f the rodents. The circular suggested that the council might arrange to hold a limited supply of rat poison, and that it be supplied to householders who were prepared tp assist in its use. The matter was referred to the Health Committee. Cr. de Castro said he did not think citizens were making any attempt to exterminate rats, judging by the few sales of poison that he had macle. SEASONAL GREETINGS.' Mr M. J. Harri&x 304 Weiidouree Parade, Ballarat, Victoria, forwar.ded the following seasonal greetings: “With warmest congratulations upon the excellent work accomplished during the year in the interests of the town, and of many happy memories. It is a great, pleasure to learn of Pae* roa’s progress, improvement, and prosperity, which I sincerely hope will continue.” It was resolved to acknowledge receipt of the greetings. The Mayor remarked that it was refreshing to hear that Mr Harris still took an active interest in borough affairs.
