BREAKING-UP CEREMONY.

PRESENTATION OF PRIZES.

The last day .at school in 1926 for the pupils of the Paeroa, District High School was marked by an official visit of the chairman of the committee (Mr C. H. Pascoe) on Friday afteTno°n,. and he .took part tn the "breaking-up” ceremony.

The pupils, were assembled in hollow square formation tutside the buildings with their teachers, and were addressed by the chairman. After congratulating the Jeachers in charge and the pupils on the good work d c ne and progress made throughout the year, Mr Pascoe wished them all a pleasant vacation and a bright and happy Christmas. Addressing the pupils of the secondary department, Mr Pascoe raid that it was gratifying to the committee, and he felt sure to the parents also, to receive such splendid reports. He said that it was necessary and very desirable that parents should allow their children on leaving the primary school to obtain a secondary education, if only for a couple of years, if they, were to take their rightful place in the community and become estimable citizens. The Paer'ia High School held a position for its size second to none in the province, and he trusted that the pupils, would always try and maintain the high standard which had prevailed. The committee took a a keen interest in the welfare_pf the school and the progress of the pupils, and was justly proud of and grateful to Mr Taylor and his staff of teachers. He wished them all a happy.holiday, and trusted that they would begin the new year firmly resolved to carry on the, traditions of the school and make a determined effort to .add further laurels, to it themsevesi.

. In wishing the chidren a Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year Mr Taylor said that he desired to express his' keen appreciation of the way they had all worked and for the loyalty and help he had received from his staff. Mr Taylor also paid a tribute, to the work of the committee during the year, and asked the chairman to accept his own land his staff’s best thanks for the assistance given and interest taken in the welfare of .the school generally. presentation of prizes.

At Mr Taylor’s request Mr Pascoe presented the prizes and the Muckland Education Board’s, certificates of merit to the winners df the home garden competition. The following'were the prize winners :— Standard V.: Vegetables, George Fulton first, Jack Dickson second. Standard IV.: Jack Chamberlain, Standard HI.: Major Chamberlain; flowers', Nancy Jones. Standard IT.' Vegetables, Will Dickson. A certificate of merit was , won by Rqwa Dickson'for her flower garden., EXAMINATION CERTIFICATES. Mr Pascoe also Presented certificates of proficiency to 36 pupils who had been successful in the recent Standard VI. examinations and three certificates of competency.

The chairman congratulated the successful pupils and expressed the hope that they would return again to school in the mew year and continue to gain distinction during their school career. BASKETBALL SHIELD. On behalf of the association Mr Pascoe also presented the basketball shield, which is competed for annually by the schools affiliated to the association and which yeas won this year by the Paeroa primary school girls’ team.
