DENTAL CLINIC.

PROJECT FOB PAEROA. SUPPORT OF BOROUGH COUNCIL. At the Paeroa Borough Council meeting on Tuesday night a request for support in its endeavour to erect a dental clinic at Paeroa was received from the Paeroa District High School Committee.

The Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) said there could be no question of the worthiness of the object, but it required something more than a mere resolution. Unfortunately the council had almost exceeded its quota of unauthorised expenditure. Cr. Hare said t,hat moral support at least should, be given the project.

To Cr. de. Castro the Mayor explained .that free treatment would be accorded children in the primer classes, and in time every child attending the school would be receiving free dental treatment. Cr. Edwards said the project was worthy of hearty support and the endorsement .o'f the council at least should be given. Cr. de Castro said he c°uld not help thinking . that private enterprise would suffer. He did not. think there were many people in .Paeroa who could not afford to pay for the care of their children’s teeth. It might be 'regarded as a liberal action on the part of the Government to bring down the measure, but it was continually crying poverty, and he was of opinion that the money could be spent in better directions other, than on establishing dental clinics. . - ‘ Cr. Hares' that he did not agree with Cr. de Castro’s sentiments, and he was so much in favour df having a clinic at Paeroa that he was prepared to donate £5 towards the project.

Cr. Silcock considered .that it would be an everlasting shame if Paeroa; did not avail itsejf of the opportunity to provide for. the welfare and health of the schoolchildren. ‘ ' Cr. Pinder said that the movement w®s a national one, and well worthy Of support.

On the motion of the Mayor it was resolved that the council give the project its hearty support, arid cooperate with the committee in every possible way to bring the undertaking- to fruition.
