DOBSON MINE DISASTER.

HELP FOR THE DEPENDANTS.

BOROUGH COUNCIL TAKES ACTION

The recent disastrous; fatalities at the Dobson coal mine, on tfie W*st Coast, South. Island, was brought vividly before the ’minds of the local borough councillors at last night’s meeting.

A petition bearing the signatures of the Mayors of Greymouth, Brunner, and Runanga, and other prominent people, was received. The petition solicited subscriptions to establish a relief fund for, the dependants of those miners; who lost their lives in the disaster at the Dobson coal mine on December 3.

The Mayor (Mr YV. Marshall) said that the appeal was. a worthy one, and one that must appeal to everyone.

Cr. F. E. Flatt said that there were a number of funds that were not completed, and he beliqved the Government was going to consolidate such funds. He thought everyone who could, should support the appeal. Cr. G. P. de Castro remarked thati the deceased miners would be injured, and the widows would get a pension. Cr. Flatt said the appeal should receive every support, but it was. a bad. time to launch an appeal locally. Cr. Hare said he was, willing to support the appeal personally, but he. was afraid it would not receive much public sympathy if a subscription list was merely displayed. Cr. Pinder kaid he was df the opinion that the money resulting from such appeals was often mis-spent, in that it did not reach the people for whom it was. intended.

Cr. Flatt objected to the last speaker’s remarks, and instanced the good that had beeii done on the occasion of the Kaitangata mine On the motion df the Mayor it was resolved that a benefit concert be held in the New Year, and that the deputy-Mayor. and Cr. Porritt be a sub-committee to organise ths project.
