OHINEMURI COUNTY.
SPECIAL COUNCIL MEETING.
A special meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council wafe held at Paeroa on Wednesday, the chairman (Cr. H. M. Corbett) presiding over the following : Crs. C- Mason, A. R. Robinsdn, A. D. McGuire, C. Mac<e, F- RHubbard, the county clerk {Mr R. W. Evans), and the county engineer (Mr E. Shaw). REVALUATION OF LAND.
A circular letter was received from the Valuation Department stating that as the application?; for revaluations of land were very numerous and there was a limit to the amount of work which could be undertaken in any one year, the revision of Ohinemuri County valuations could not be undertaken this year, but preparations would be made with a view to making the new values operate from March 31, 1928.
The chairman Observed .that there was no doubt much work entailed. Cr. Mason said that the urgency of a revision of the county valuations should be stressed.
Other councillors supported, this, but it was thought that there was little chance of the work being expedited sufficiently for next year’s rates.
It was decided to make representations as suggested. ROAD WORK. The Public Works Department’s resident engineer, Paeroa-, wrote advising that approval had been obtained for the council to carry Out work o'n Trig and Pukekauri roads by day labour. ACCESS TO SECTION. The chief surveyor, Lands Department, Auckland, wrote seeking information concerning a means of access to Mr J. O’Brien’s section near the sanitairy reserve at Karangahake. Cr. McGuire said that there was| no reason to object to thq route ,suggested many years ago. It was agreed to advise the department accordingly. WAIKATO HIGHWAY. The Waikato County Council forwarded several letters relative to the meeting of the members of the No. 2 District Highways Council which it proposed calling to discuss, the'amount of expenditure that the Public Works Department finds necessary for. the maintenance of the main highway from Ohinewai to Ngaruawahia. The chairman of the District Highways Council had been asked td call the meeting but had declined to do so. As some county councils had agreed to the foregoing suggestion a d®ite for a meeting was fixed, but had to; be deferred, and it was now suggested that the meeting be held at Hamilton on a' date to be arranged later. The clerk reported that, acting on instructions, he had replied advising that the council did not'desire its representative to attend. COUNTY CONFERENCE. The Rural Counties’ Association advised that a conference would be hejd at Hamilton on December 15 to discuss measures to be taken to prevent the removal of timber values from the Rolls. There was also a proposal that counties should circulate petitions in each of their ridings praying Parliament to grant relief from, excessive rating for hospital purposes. The chairman said that the county was' not concerned with timber values. In regard, to the hospital rates, this ■matter had been and was being dealt with by the N.Z. Association. He did not- see .the need of a second counties’ association and a duplication of effort... PETROL PUMP. . . R. and'S. Shaw, Waikino, applied ifor permission, to instal a petrol pump in front of their store. —Granted. The' chairman advocated charging an annual rental of £1 Is a year.— Agreed to. ROAD IMPROVEMENTS. The Maorilahd Consolidated Gold Mining Co., Waitekauri, wrote asking that the council expend the £l5O grant on repairing the road to, the mine. The company would soon be in active operation, and the state df the road would be a hindrance. The engineer said that £5O was provided on the last Public Works Department estimates. It was decided to ask for authority to expend the grant. James Patterson, Paeroa Road, Te Aroha, wrote drawing attention to the state of his access road.
Cr. Mace urged that some assistance should be given, and the matter was referred to the engineer. J. Ryall and F. Lewis wrote asking that the unmetalled portion bf Ryall’s Road be formed and gravelled. The engineer said’ that the road .was previously a half-chain road, and it had been agreed that if the council ’legalised it the council’s liability would cea?e.
It was decided that the chairman and the two riding members go into the matter. WATER SUPPLY SCHEME. The matter of utilising a certain creek in the Kaimanawa riding for the purpose pf providing a water supply for the lower part of the Tiding was brought up by Cr. Robinson, who Risked that the engineer look into the scheme and prepare a brief report for the benefit of the settlers concerned. —Agreed to. FINANCE. Accounts totalling £944 19s Id on the county fund account, £24 4? lOd on the water supply account, and £2 on the cemetery account were passed for payment. The 'receipts for the month totalled £3BB Is 7d, including £Bl 12s 6d general rates, £ll5 12s lid goldfields revenue, and £Bl 6s 6d from the Waihi Borough Council for main rofad maintenance.
