MEETING-HOUSE DANCE.

MAORI SOCIAL EFFORT.

AN ENJOYABLE EVENING,

In order to make improvements to the cooking quarters attached to the Maori Meeting-house on Te Aroha Road the Natives organised a basket social evening to' raise .the “moni” to carry out their plan.

The event took plac&in the Meet-ing-house last night, and not’ only was the presentment, of all the unique and interesting items appreciated by the large attendance, but the effort proved financially even better (han was anticipated. A poi dance, led by Mrs T. Royal, was a great success, as also was a haka dance conducted by Mr Titi Royal. Hula dances were performed by Miss. Cora Tukukino and Miss Ena Sanft. There were also ordinary dances, in which Natives and Europeans alike enjoyed themselves. Songs were rendered by Mr Ray. Foster, and a duet by Mr and Mrs Royal. The Symphony Orchestra supplied the music.

An auction sale of the baskets foklowed. Competition was keen; and some extraordinary “hauls” were revealed in the “hiddeji treasures.” One gentleman purchaser on unveiling his basket discovered he had “hooked” a choice chicken and a; rosy box of strawberries —price £2. Several other lots realised fom 10s to ,15s ; tlfus the Native cookhouse stands, a chance of improvement.
