DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.

MEETING OF PAEROA COMMITTEE.

ROUTINE BUSINESS.

The monthly meeting of the Paeroa District High School. Committee was hejd on Saturday night, the chairman (Mr C. H. Pascoe) presiding over the following: Messrs W. T. Power, WPurdie, C. T. Mettam, W. Smith, J. H. McDonald, W. N. Chamberlain, W. L. Lawrence (secretary), and G. H. Taylor Lheadmasterii. # WELCOME TO MEMBER.

On behalf of the members the chairman extended a hearty welcome to Mr Chamberlain, who has been appointed vice Mr Blakeway, resigned. The chairman expressed the hope that the work would be found interesting, and that Mr Chamberlain would cooperate in working for the welfare ot the school.

In reply Mr Chamberlain thanked the chairman for the welcome and stated that as he had spent his school days af Paeroa he would be proud and privileged to 1 do whatever he could for..the ;welfare and advancement of the old school. LEAKING VENTILATOR. The headmaster reported that the repairs effected to a ventilator in the main building had not been satisfactorily carried out. When rain fell there was a large leak, and as a consequence the full use of the classroom was not available. It was resolved to communicate with the local Ann concerned. . TARRING AND SANDING. A circular was received from the Education Board, Auckland, advising that it had no staff available for tarring and sanding school grounds, and it was proposed that where such work was warranted all materials wobld oe supplied, but the. committee would have to obtain and pay for the labour of spreading it. Such a course would make it possible for all tarring and sanding deemed necessary being undertaken simultaneously during the Christmas vacation.

The chairman drew attention to the fact that no tarring and sanding had been done at Paeroa for over three years. As a, portions of the playing areas were badly chipped and broken. Frequent applications had been made to the, board to have the work done.

It was generally agreed that with the limited amount available out of capitation the committee could not possibly finance the cost' of labour, .although the work was urgently required.. It was decided to advise the board of the position iipd request that some assistance be givep. It was also resolved to bring the circular before the notice of the Primary School Committees’ Association for discussion and assistance iif resisting the boards’ proposal. , DENTAL CLINIC. The secretary reported progress in connection with the steps taken to raise funds for the purpose of establishing a dental clinic at Paeroa, In response to a circular appeal sent out to householders it was stated that the ’ .amount received and promised totalled £lo' 16s 6d. A further £9O was still required before the department’s subsidy could be applied for.

After considerable discussion the matter was referred to a speciajl subcommittee, with a recommendation that the assistance and support of the Mayor be sought. Mr McDonald stated that it was quite evident that the public was no,t with the committee in its efforts to establish a clinic, and he doubted the wisdo’m of going on with the project. He gave notice to move the next meeting that the Director of Dental Hygiene be advised that the committee did not intend to go &n with the establishment of a clinic at Paeroa, and that the donations received from the public be returned. x NEW PLAYING AREA. - '

In connection with the new playingarea, it was decided .to advertise the oat crop for sale, and the headmaster and secretary were appointed to deal with and arrange Tor ploughing the area as soon as the crofc was harvested. INFANTS’ ROOM. On the recommendation of the headmaster it _was decided .to majre further representations to the board with reference to the painting of the infants’ room. NOXIOUS WEEDS'. Attention was drawn to the growth, of noxious weeds in the grass ateas of the playground. ■ Messrs Power and Purdie were appointed a visiting committee and authorised to engage labour to clean up the areas referred to. STAFFING OF HIGH SCHOOLS.

The Opotiki District High School forwarded a circular letter relative to the efficient staffing of district high schools.

The headmaster explained the position as between primary and district high schools, and. the position as it obtained at Paeroa.

It was decided to support the circular only so far as staffing was concerned.

FINANCE. Accounts amounting to £24 18s Id were passed for payment.
