At the Police Court .this morning, before Messrs. W. Marshall a,nd. W. F. North, J’s.P., a first offender, whd did not appear, was charged with drunkenness in Normanby Road on Saturday evening. A conviction was entered and the amount of bail, £l, forfeited.

A special meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council is to be held to-mor-row night tor the purpose of considering matters in connection with the Paeroa hospital..

A sp.ea.ker at the drainage meeting at Netherton on Friday stated that the name df Hauraki Plains was mud. An inter jector observed that the speaker had voted against the roads loan, thereby helping to prolong the mud roads.

The payment during the month of accounts totalling £l3OO 19s 8d on the county fund account and £665 9s 9d on loan accounts was confirmed at Thursday’s meeting of the Plains County Council, and accounts totalling £3356 7s Id on the county fund account and £1356 8s lOd on loan accounts were passed for payment.

Gored by a bull at the Showgrounds at Christchurch on Friday afternoon, an elderly man named William Templeton, of Mount Hutt, Methven, received grave injuries. He was taken to the public hospital for treatment of head injuries, but it .was later discovered that his spine was fractured. His condition is serious. It is reported by the show officials that the. man was not employed by the A. and PAssociation, nor was he the owner of the animal. He entered the bull’s stall, put his, arms round it, and immediately collapsed. The bull, which is a six-yeay-old Jersey, became excited, but calmed down immediately its owner arrived.

At the Waihi Police Court on Friday, Messrs J. Murray and W. E. Busch, J’s.P., presiding, the hearing of the charge against J. J. Ritchie alleging that as town clerk he had stolen a sum of money (£34 7s), the property of the Waihi Borough Council, was adjourned for a further seven days—to Friday, November 19. Ip asking for the remand Senior-Sergeant Maclean stated that the audit pf the council’s book was still in progress, but that the police expected that the full list of charges to be preterred against accused woiuld be ready for the next sitting of the court. Mr J. B. Becche, who appeared for accused, asked that the police should furnish information as early as possible to pe,rmit of his client preparing his defence, for which he (counsel) considered tha ; t least a week would be required. The sergeant intimated that the infdrmatioil sought would be supplied at the ear* liest moment possible. Bail was renewed in a total £75.0', twfo sureties of £250 each and accused ih £250.

Rough and unsettled weather continues to prevail locally. On Saturday afternoon there was a heavy hailstorm, preceded by thunder and Wllowed by torrential rain, after which the atmosphere cleared for a few hours, when further heavy rain fell. Heavy rain was recorded intermittently throughout yesterday, but there were brief intervals of sunshine. This morning dawned grey and misty, and before 11 o’clock a heavy shower of rain and hajl passed over the town. The weather so, far this month has been unusually wet and stormy. A spell of summer weather would be much appreciated by fanners and town residents at the present time.
