PAEROA BOROUGH.
MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING.
ROUTINE BUSINESS 1 .
The monthly meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council was held last night, His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) presiding over .the following: Crs. E. Edwards, P. E. Brenan, F. E. Flatt, J. W. Silcock, H, J. Hare, G. P. de Castro, J. Pinder, E. A. Porritt, and the town clerk (Mr W. C. Alexander). CONSTRUCTION OF DRAIN.
A firm of Thames solicitors, acting for Mr R. Whitten, wrote in to a drain constructed through Whitten’s land in King Street to provide drainage for Mr J. Breiian’s residence. Information was sought as to whether the conditions provided for by the eighth schedule to the Municipal Corporations Act had been complied with prior to the construction of the drain.
The town clerk’s reply was approved.
SEWERAGE CONNECTIONS.
J. Bertelsen wrote stating that on account of his financial position he was unable to connect his house to the sewerage system, and asked that he be allowed to defer .the matter for three months.
Cr, Hare said tha t t the applicant would have received notice to connect up from the health inspector.
Cr. Brenan said that under the circumstances it would be judicious, on the council’s part to defer the matter far two months without) prejudicing anything the health inspector might do. He moved to that effect. Cr. de Castro seconded.
The motion was. carried on the understanding that no nuisance would be created in the meantime. Cr. Pinder intimated that the applicant intended to close up the premises.
Miss C. Keller wrote inquiring if the council was prepared to carry the sewerage system .to the boundary of her property in Wood Street so as to enable her to connect the house to the system. The Mayor said that 100 feet of extension would be required, at a cost of about £2O to £BO.
On the motion o'f Cr. Hare the matter was deferred pending consideration of further extensions tp the system in other parts of the borough. The district Public Trustee wrote advising that it was desired that the council should call tenders and superintend the Avork of connecting the Gaiety Theatre to the borough seAverage system. The work Avould be paid for in ’full on completion. In regard to the cottage situated alongside the theatre, it A\*as not intended to proceed with the work of connecting with the sewer immediately, as the question of the removal of the house or its dispdsal ha ; d not yet been determined. It Avas resolved that the council invite tenders for the Avork. The district engineer, N.Z. Railways, advised that he had received instructions to proceed Avith the connection of the houses at the. railway settle-; ment Avith the seAverage system immediately, and the Avork wduld be carried out in accordance Avith the plan submitted. NGAHINA WHARF ROAD. The resident Public Works Department engineer wrote in reply to the council's request to repair the road leading to the Ngahina Avhahf, Puke, and advised that there Avas. nothing on record which Avould involve the department in any liability for repairs to the Avharf approaches. The Mayor said that the engineer had led him to believe that the department Avould repair the road. He moved that the council disclaim liability for the maintenance and repair of the. road, and the matter be left in the hands of the works committee. In seconding the resolution Cr. Brenan said that the maintenance would greatly increase as time Avent on, especially so long as the Hauraki Plains County Council Avas carting metal. SUBSIDIES FOR ROADS. The resident engineer, Public Works Department, Avrote advising that on the current main highways estimates the sum of £lOO subsidy on a £ for £ basis Avas provided for the purpose of assistance toAvards the maintenance of the Paeroa-Kopu main highAvay through the Paeroa borough. In the event of the council making .a claim fo)’ the money at a later date; and before any subsidy could be paid, it Avould be necessary to submit, details in quadruplicate of the work to be carried out for the approval of the department. Further amounts of £lOO each Avere .also available for the Pokeno-Waihi and the Paeroa-Hamil-ton main higiiAvays.
The Mayor stated that the matter had been dealt with and the estimates forAvarded to the department. The position was not as gopd ,as it appealed on the surface. The council would not actually receive the £lo’o. The council could only collect, per. mile, a sum equal to expenditure by adjacent local bodies. Cr. Pinder said that the highways scheme was the greatest ci"oss-'void puzzle he had ever come achoss. The letters were received, and the action of the Avorks committee and chairman of the AA’orks committee was approved. ERECTION OF HOARDING. W. W. Scott, building contractor, applied tor permission to erect a boarding in front of the building under construction for the National Trading Co. in Normanby Road.
Permission was granted so long as not less than four feet of the footpath Avas left available.
CHRISTMAS NIGHT PICTURES. Mr P. J. Jennings applied for per? mission to screen a special picture programme, at the Gaiety Theatre on Christmas night.
Permission Avas granted subject to the programme being submitted fdr the council’s approval. TOWN CLERKS’ CONFERENCE.
The town clerk, Stratford, forwarded particulars o'f a tOAvn clerks’ association, and suggested that a conference of town clerks should be held al Palmerston North in February next, prior to the’ conference of the Municipal Association.
Cr. Silcock asked if it Avas another labour union.
The Mayor said he thought it might mean shorter hours and less work. Cr. Flatt said that in his opinion it was desirable thfit local body officers should confer annually, and he moved that the council give its approval to the suggestion. Cr. Brena,n agreed, and said that the council should do all it could to facilitate the town clerk taking part in the conference. The resolution was carried. TAYLOR’S AVENUE. Cr. Flatt drew attention to the; amount of speeding that was occurring along Taylor’s, Avenue. That street appeared ,to be used by motorists of trying out the speed of their cars. • Motor cyclists also travelled far too fast along the avenue. Apart from the heavy damage that was being done to the uoad there Was; also the likelihood of a serious accident happening. The matter was referred to the inspector and local constable to take action against offenders. BLINDING ON PUKE ROAD.
Cr. Silcock drew attention to the need of blinding the metal placed on Puke Road. He said he could not understand why the metal was hot blinded when it was put on. The Ohinemuri County Council had recently remetalled a portion of the road in question, and blinding was done, the result being that there was a fairly good surface. The matter was referred to the chairman of the -works committee. THAMES ROAD FOOTPATH. Cr. Porritt drew attention to the bad state of portions of the Thames Road footpath, and asked that attention be given to them.—Referred to the works committee, with power to act. „
