AWAITI DRAINAGE.

QUESTION OF DRAIN BLOCKAGE.

CONFERENCE TO BE HELD

An important meeting is to be held in the Netherton Hah on Friday between the Awaiti settlers and the chief drainage engineer, the officials to be present being the Under-Secre-tary 'for Lands; chief drainage engineer, district engineer, members of the Public Works Department, members of the Elstow Drainage Board, and Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P. The object of the meeting is. to bring to a head matters concerning the blocking of six dra,ins, which is playing havoc with the Awaiti settlement, such block having been put in by the Elstow Board with the consent of the Lands Department. Also, to get an explanation from .the district Government engineer, who, on being advised by the Minister for Lands, to report on the flooded Awaiti Settlement, replied that there was only an area of twelve acres, flooded, whilst the settlers will endeavour to prove—per medium of a series of photographs, the Mayor of Paeroa (Mr W. Marshall), the president of the Paeroa Chamber of .Commerce (Mr P. the tradesmen doing this district, and practically the whole df the Awaiti settlers, — that on the day of the Government engineer’s visit fully one thousand acres of this settlement were heavily flooded.
