AN ARCHITECT’S FEES.
PLANS OF PAEROA HOSPITAL.
DISCUSSION AS TO PAYMENT. At Monday’s meeting of the Thames tivspital Board, following tne discussion on the postponing or tne erec don of the Paeroa hospital, the QUcsyioii or payment of fees to the architect was considered.
ivir r. E. Brenan introduced the matter, and said tnat it was only reasonable to reimburse Mr E. b. Gillman for his services and plans supplied to the board. He moved that Mr Giilman be asked to render his account, and that the amount be a charge on the general funds of the board. Seconded by Mr C. W. Kennedy. 'lhe chairman (Mr W. E. Hale) stated that the matter had not been overlooked, but he could not see why the amount should be a charge on the general fund. Mr Brenan remarked that the chairman could-vote against the resolution if he wished.
The chairman said that if the money collected for the buffeting was in excess of the amount required it would be in order to pay the fees from tnat fund. Mr Brenan urged that, it was not a fair charge to use the money donated by Paeroa people Mr E. L. Walton said that he wished to disassociate himsejf from Mr Brenna's resolution. He was quite willing to pay the architect what was due’ to him. He moved as an amendment that Mr Gillman be paid, and the question of which fund the money should be taken from be referred to the board’s solicitors for an opinion.
The amendment was seconded by Mr C. W. Parfitt.
Mr Brenan said that his resolution was quite definite. It was apparent that some of the members were strenuously opposed to .the erection of the hospital, but, in any case, it was only reasonable for the architect to be paid a fair price for his services.
Mr Parfitt agreed that Mr Gillman was entitled tc payment, but he considered that the fees should be met out of the capital of the Paeroa hospital fund. Mr Brenan said that so long a/s the architect was notified of the board’s decision not to go on with .the building, and, he was reimbursed, he would be prepared to withdraw his resolution. He added that he could not agree that it was necessary to waste a couple of guineas .to obtain a legal opinion a.s to which fund the money should be taken from. On the amendment being put it was carried on the show of hands.
