Particulars of train arrangements in connection with the Waikato races at Te Rapa Racecourse on November 13 and 15 are advertised in this issue. Very heavy rain fell on the Plains, on Friday night, and though it was fine on Saturday, heavy rain fell continuously all Saturday night. The fall recorded at the Lands Office, Kerepeehi, for the 48 hours ending at 8 a.m. on Sunday morning was 2.69 inches, and for the month to date 3.61 inches. As a result the land on the Plains is now in a very wet state. Drains were running at capacity cn Sunday morning, and much low-lying land was. submerged by accumulated storm-water. Reports from the hill country indicate that the rain there was very heav, and that some flooding took place. On Saturday morning there w.as 2ft of water oh the Torehape-Puhanga road, and the main highway at Mangatawhare Valley was badly flooded. To many people it would appear incredible that a person now about. 50 years of age, and who for the greater portion df that time had resided at Egmont Village, New Plymouth, until last week had never ridden in a railway train (says the Eltham Argusi). Nevertheless, it is a fact. The person referred to is a woman who has been occupied in farming duties, and has now disposed of the farm. By way of a little Relaxation she decided to have a day’s pleasure and took a trip to Waitara per train. Hen excitement was intense, and as she gazed, out of the carriage window 1 she remarked: “It’s, just lovely, you can see everything so beautifully, and it appears to be perfectly safe.” It is now her intention to “see life.”
