POLICE COURT.

MONTHLY PAEROA SITTING. CASES DEALT WITH. At the Police Court, Paeroa, this morning, before Mr J. W. Boynton .S.M., the following cases were dealt with : — FAILING TO REGISTER. John Edward Fleming, factoryhand, Wharepoa, was charged with failing to* register for training with the N.Z. Military Forces. Accused, stated that he had arrived from Australia five and a half years ago and did not know he had to register. There was no drill at Wharepoa.

The Bench inflicted a fine of £2, with costs £1 12s.

MAORIS AND LIQUOR.

Jack Kotara (Mr E. A. Porritt), a Maori, Tirohia, was charged, .with having a three-gallon keg of beer for consumption off licensed premises on October 16 last.

A similar charge w,as also preferred against another Maori named George Morehu.

Both accused pleaded guilty. Sergeant Maclean stated that as the result of nifofimation received Constable McClinchy visited Tirohia . nd., found the two men carrying the beer in a sack. A statement was’ implicating a local hotelkeeper. However, this was later denied and a statement made to the effect that an agent had purchased the liquor <for the Maoris. There w.as little doubt that Kotara was the owner, and Morehu was merely helping hi,m to carry the liquor.

Kotara was convicted and fined £5, in default 14 days’ imprisonment, and Morehu was convicted and fined £2, in default 7 days’ imprisonment. MAINTENANCE CLAIM.

Mrs Alice Maud McKinnon proceeded against her husband, Angus Ronald McKinnon, Ngatea, charging him with failure to contribute £1 a week towards the support of herself a ; nd child under the .terms of a maintenance order. Arrears amounting to £ll to October 23 last were also claimed. Judgment was given for plaintiff, with costs, warrant to be suspended for one month. EXEMPTION FROM DRILL. F. E. Fleming, a youth employed at the Wharepoa cheese factory, applied for exemption from military training on the grounds df. hardship. He stated that under the .award he was required to work seven days a week of sixty hours.

The application was granted subject to service in camp.
