IN THEIR OLD AGE.
POCKET MONEY FOR INMATES.
IS 9s A MONTH SUFFICIENT ?
The question of the amount of money allowed to old age pensioners in the Parke Island (Hawke’s Bay) Home was brought up at a meeting if the committee of that institution by Mr L. Stein, who inquired wheher the 9s per month allowed was sufficient for? their needs. "From general inquiries, !■ believq that we are one of the most liberal committees in the Dominion,” said the chairman, Mr J. Harris.
Mr R. Hay-Chapman explained that besides the 9s per month pocket money, which wa.s; pretty well a standard rate throughout New Zealand, the old men received tobacco and matches each week, while the committee provided them with clothing. For the benefit of Mr Stein it was stated that the committee received an average £l7O a month in pensions', and £2O of this was returned as pocket money.
Mr Stein expressed it as his opinion that the committee should obtain information regarding the methods of other boards,in connection with their old people. It was finally decided to approach the dther boards, and to obtain the information required by Mr Stein.
