ENGINEER'S OCTOBER REPORT.

ROADING AND MAINTENANCE.

The following report for the month of October was submitted to yesterday’s meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council by the engineer (Mr E. Shaw) :—

“Proposals have been sent foi’w (rd for metalling portion of Old Tauranga Road between Waimata Bridge ami Ford Road under subsidy £lOO, £ for £, and also for metalling portion of PevrteaFs Road, Mangaiti, under subsidy £75, £ for £. Tenders were called during the month for. the supply a,nd delivery of metal at Waitoki. Two tenders were received, and the lowest tender being that of Mr J. Clarkin, it was accepted by .the chairman at 16s

per yard, “In company with the resident engineer of the Public Works Department, Mr 0. G. Thornton, an inspection of the Waitoki stream was, made in regard to the prevention of the overflowing in flood time and the damaging of the embankment. A letter will come before you to-day from the department on the matter, and I would recommend the council’s acceptance of same.

“In company with the chaiijman and Crs. Mason and Hands an inaction was made of the roads in the Wajtawheta district (incl'udipg the proposed deviation at Cox’s Hill), and also several roads in the Waihi riding, including a birdge site over the Waimata stream. This bridge is very necessary to give the children in the back roads easy access to the. Plains Sichobl, and so save some of them e»tra miles of travelling. As .there is no money in sight 'for this work .a grant will be asked 'for. on next year's estimates, and in the meantime a temporary bridge could be erected at a small cost which would carry a saddle-horse. Sufficient timber is on hand in the vicinity tol cardy out the work. Concerning the deviation at Cox’s Hill, it will be necessary to take steps to arrange with the owners for the land for the road. Failing an agreement with them the same could be taken under the Public Works Act. "Fair progress has been made during the month with the scarifying and rolling of the Thames Road.

“In company with the chairman' and Crs. Mace and Mason an inspection of. the council’s cottage at Mangaiti was made. The chairman will no doubt explain the flesult of .the inspection.” The recommendations, were agreed to and theen gineer auhorised to act.
